Futtocks Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 I've got Belgium in a Eurovision sweepstake. It won't win, but I reckon it'll place quite well. Which is of no earthly use to me. One of the things I noticed is that, with a platform made of LEDs, you don't need tape markers for stage setup or performance. You can just programme the markers to appear when they are needed, instead of using physical indicators. I haven't set up a concert venue since 1996, and the technology's disappeared out of sight since then. 1 Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. Interesting, in these days of lots of staring at sports gambling and influencing, to note that bets were still being taken yesterday despite the juries having voted - and those jurors knowing how they voted - on Friday. The concert and the week has been a lot of fun. As ever, they never seem to quite get it right with the process for choosing the actual winner. Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. This is in addition to the wall of publicity already. I don't want to deny anyone their enjoyment of something and can very well accept that many people enjoy it and get a lot of pleasure from it. But frankly, this is ridiculous and completely OTT. Sorry guys. It's the first time the UK has hosted the contest in 25 years. It may never happen again. The Beeb are making a big deal of it, exactly as they should. Don't worry. Pick of the Pops will be on next week. And the week after. And the week after that, etc etc etc. Eurovision won't. It's once a year, that's all. 4 .

It's once a year, that's all. Right. I'm glad you enjoy the Eurovision, that's up to you and not up for debate. But why does it have to be so all encompassing? Was there any need to disrupt everyone else's schedule? As it happens I work a lot of weekends and can rarely listen live. But never mind eh? You got to watch the build ups during the week, the mass radio coverage and of course, the actual final itself - wasn't that enough? Not to mention that all these programmes were on BBC Sounds too? It was saturation coverage. I'm very much a live and let live kinda person but I strongly maintain that the coverage and hype for this event was ridiculously OTT. Just my opinion, you feel differently. 2

The concert and the week has been a lot of fun. As ever, they never seem to quite get it right with the process for choosing the actual winner. They actually take bets on professional wrestling now... you'd have to be insane to bet on something like that. With Eurovision, there is still the element of public vote at least. I'm OK with the way they choose the winner as I think it's a good balance, but I won't be surprised if they go to full public voting but announced by individual countries in future. My problem with this is that I think it would benefit novelty acts and result in countries winning for reasons other than having the best song much more common. Conchita Wurst was lucky because the song was a genuine belter, but with a purely public vote they could still win even if the song was one of the worst because of what they stood for. If you take Ukraine out of it last year, who clearly won because of extreme circumstances, the winner of the televote was a very similar style song to the Finland one this year - upbeat, fast, a bit silly and quirky. 1 A Widnesian in Ireland blog What is the best system for Super League? Nope, even earlier than that. A smart host city can spend a lot and, with good management, recoup far more. I like the current voting system. The juries mitigate too many votes for tedious wackiness or empty camp, while the public vote provide huge dramatic swings as we reach the climax. No, it isn't 100% fair (and nothing would be), but by God it's entertaining. 2 Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. In fact, I intensely dislike the whole pantomime freak show, though I do miss Katie Boyle. I trust this is a better explanation of my view. I recognise that millions of others are real fans and that they are entitled to experience and enjoy the whole thing. Same for fans of Wimbledon, Strictly Come Dancing etc. Thus, although the main BBC channel carried end to end coverage from Monday till Saturday, it did not concern me since there were 3 other live BBC TV channels, plus live ITV, C4 etc and numerous other sources of enjoyment and entertainment.
