North Wales v Midlands venue change

Recommended Posts

Here we go again, perhaps we should rename the club North Wales Nomads!

This will be our tenth home venue since we formed nearly 12 years ago.

At least it's in North Wales, just outside the picturesque village of Llanrwst in Snowdonia. about 15 miles south of Llandudno.

Coventry bears had the same issue while in league 1. It was a bit of a nightmare and really affected the clubs revenue.

Unfortunately you find out how valued you are as a tenant at times like these. Push on through the season and re-evaluate where to play next season.

Looks frustrating. On the bright side Zipworld after the match?

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

It looks very picturesque but a little basic, though I suppose for a one-off it’s not a huge problem.

It's #### that they're forced into playing at places like this and Caldy - they really aren't up to semi-pro standard.

I really feel for NWC and their supporters. It looked as though they had found a home that could meet their needs long term at Colwyn Bay, but they seem to be treated as an afterthought and given the elbow whenever their fixtures are inconvenient. The lack of timely notification from their landlords just adds to that.

Do you know why they can’t play the match in Colwyn Bay?

The grass pitch at the stadium has been removed and replaced with a 4g pitch. The annoying thing is that the club have bent over backwards to accommodate the change (not that we have any choice) and have now gone 11 weeks without a home game. I think OriginalMrC sums it up nicely in his post, it's all about how valued you are as a tenant.

There is another 4g pitch next to the stadium and if you look at the pictures of the women's game from Sunday, it looks pretty much the same standard as Midlands Hurricanes are using for their home games.

Edit: sorry, put the wrong link up, changed it to the right one.

It's unbelievable what we have to put with, as well as the visiting clubs and the RFL, who have also been inconvenienced by all of this.

Anyway, I've found a few more pictures of the ground here: https://www.kingfisherlighting.com/kingfisher-sport/case-studies/nant-conwy-rfc/

What's even more frustrating for me is that I'm working for the next three Sundays and can't get the time off.

Nant Conwy is a great place to watch a game, I'm actually quite gutted that I'm working and won't be able to make it.

The club themselves are one of a few clubs in North Wales who conduct their club business in Welsh, which will make for a bit of a different experience for any visitors. Don't worry though, their English is still pretty good 😂

It's a beautiful setting and I'm looking forward to the visit on Sunday. Google Street View will show you the clubhouse which looks like it was (re)built just a couple of years ago.

You're/they're called North Wales so why can't the model be based on playing across North Wales? Alternatively why weren't they called Wrexham Crusaders previously or the name of where they are based now? Not being pedantic just curious. Same with London and Midlands really.

They were originally called Celtic Crusaders to be fair - imagine the scope for moving around there!

In all seriousness I do wonder with teams that are named regionally (Midlands for example as you've stated) suffer simply from a lack of identity - it almost seems like the reverse of a problem cricket has, where you get some sections of county fans (myself included) who just don't identify with the franchise teams of the Hundred.

In a way it almost feels like if you have a regional name (so NW or Midlands) you should be moving around the region you're representing although in a more planned way, and getting to the communities you're trying to reach. Easier said than done though trying to get people through the gates of "outgrounds" when you're talking about teams who don't have big fanbases to start with, but maybe in the longer term it'd start to pay off.
