6 again on first tackle

I've suggested this on several occasions on this board (though I've usually said make it an extra three).

The other side of the coin is that you hardly ever see a 6 again on the fifth tackle, or even the fourth. It's probably partly because defenders are more careful to concede them at that stage in the tackle count, but I also think refs tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the defence at that stage, becuase it would be such a huge call.

You should try watching a warrington game we do it every game since we won the league in March.

I like the concept of the 6 again rule and how it worked before the defence coaches cottoned on to being able to concede one extra tackle to defend as being an acceptable price for slowing things down and getting their Defenders set again.

Making it a 9 tackle set for an offence on the first tackle would be a much greater deterrent as it would be very rare for a team not to get into strong attacking positions after that many tackles.

Give the team receiving the infringement the option;

Six again, tap or kick to touch, or kick at goal.

You can’t because the threshold for 6 again is/can be much lower because the penalty isnt as harsh.

It didn’t work that’s why 6 again was brought in in the first place.

It worked perfectly fine for decades with not as much controversy as the 6 again.

I’m pretty sure it was brought in to stay in line with the previous introduction of 6 again and keep the ball in play for longer.

(Before I continue, disclaimer that I am talking about the NRL really here as I watch that more religiously than Super League).

I think the 6 again has its faults - and as I have said already on this thread, I think the NRL has found a good balance with the penalty blown inside the opposition 40 - but I really wouldn't want it to be removed.

Back in 2018 the game was becoming unwatchable at times with all the penalties being blown.  The games literally never got started.  I found myself drifting away from games or even turning them off.  I had never done that before and I certainly haven't done in the last few years with 6 again in place.

Anyone wanting to do away with 6 again (this is not aimed at you Trojan) is essentially saying I prefer a game where penalties are prioritised over keeping the game moving.

Whether a penalty or a 6 again is the punishment, the best team invariably wins a game of Rugby League and I would rather see as much rugby as possible.

Good post , and I like the idea of penalty in opposition 40, could be something as simple as this that sorts it out
