Potential new League 1 club

I can’t see the feasibility of a 9 team league 1 unless they play each other 3 times.

What might happen is a merging of the 2  lower divisions into East and West :-

East being comprised of Bradford, Sheffield, York, Batley,Halifax, Keighley, Newcastle, Dewsbury, Hunslet, London, Doncaster, Fev or Toulouse, Wakefield.

West:- Widnes, Swinton, Barrow, London, Whitehaven, Workington,  Oldham, North Wales Crusaders, Rochdale, Midlands Hurricanes, Cornwall, Toulouse (assuming Fev.win promotion)

Each in their play the others in their division twice preserving all the local derbies plus as many loop fixtures required against teams in the other region. Simples!!

How about tidying it up a bit:

———————

North division (4 teams)

Newcastle, Barrow, Workington, Whitehaven

———————

West division (5 teams)

Widnes, Swinton, Oldham, Rochdale, North Wales

———————

Central division (5 teams)

Bradford, Halifax, Keighley, Sheffield, Doncaster

———————

East division (5 teams)

Wakefield, Dewsbury, Batley, Hunslet, York

———————

South division (4 teams)

Toulouse, London, Midlands Hurricanes, Cornwall

———————

OK. I'll ask. Who play who...and how many times? Or in other words how many home games would each team get to make  sustainable season?

That South division would be ridiculous.

I'd move Swindon into the South division.

Or, because I want to watch the world burn, you treat those as separate pots and each Conference has a team from each pot in it.

Ensuring that all suffer/enjoy the same benefits.

Otherwise you really are just guaranteeing the complete and total failure of expansion.

Which let’s face it, doesn’t need any extra help.

I like it. Top 2 from 5 team divisions and top from 4 team divisions to give an 8 team playoffs.

My suggestion would be 23 conferences of 1 team each. The conference could take the name of the club in it. Then teams from each conference could play the other conferences home and away.

Winner of each conference to qualify for a 23 team playoff series?

I think you’d play every team in your division home and away guaranteed every season (6 games/8 games)

As for the rest of the fixture list…well it’s up for discussion, but obviously you don’t play everyone else.

Personally I would grade and rank each team based on the previous season’s results and allocate home and away fixtures accordingly.

So the better teams play the better teams more often while the worse teams play the worse teams more often.

This is more akin to an NFL model.

Then 5 division winners and three next best runner ups make the playoffs and are seeded accordingly.

I would love to see another club from the Midlands joining the Midland Hurricanes there and playing out of either Coventry, Wolverhampton or Leicester in League 1 and developing local talent, but that's not going to happen all the while the RFL put too many hurdles in a new clubs way.

Like in London there must be a huge pool of athletes in the Midlands who would make very good Rugby League players

London Broncos, winners of the Championship London Conference 2083 making it 50 titles in row.

I think we can safely say that whatever solution is used to deal with the low number of clubs in L1, on past experience it is unlikely to last 5 years never mind 50! 🤣

You reckon it'll take ten years for them to get their act together ?

It will help facilitate money flowing down further into the grass roots if there is a route for team to go semi professional.

except

1. they don't want to because they're amateur clubs.  and  2. it costs money to run a pro club, it doesn't make money.

People outside of the very top echelons of sport, or even within them in many cases, don’t get into running sports teams because they want to make money.

So similar to NFL model - where each conference plays their own group home and away and vs another 1/2 conferences (which change each year). Basically top two go into playoffs - or top two seeds get a bye and then next best 10 teams start the playoffs.

It’s better than anything else I’ve seen suggested!!!

There is a massive pool of athletes - you only have to look at the players produced through the system over the years. Unfortunately to sustain a pro club it requires serious money/benefactor - hence Skolars demise. Very sad for the game.

Amateur teams generally play in amateur competitions for a reason.

Mainly because their grounds aren't good enough, though there are other reasons.
