Tax exile wants British taxpayers to build his Football club a new stadium.

I don't like the man but I don't have a problem with what he's saying there.

Whatever they do I hope they knock down hotel football in the process. Ugliest, cheapest building I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. Even if they decide to move 2 miles away I'd still be after blowing it to smithereens.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

Well if us RL fans can get free tickets to the Grand Final and maybe a free burger when we're there then maybe I'll give him a quid towards it.

It's the NFL way. Socialise investment, privatise profit.

The area does need regeneration and he makes a fair point re the HS2 palaver.

His argument would have a lot more credence if he paid his taxes in the UK.

"It's about time someone built a national stadium in the north of England," said the British billionaire.

Yeah, we've been saying the same in Bradford for decades, pal! 😄

He'd soon lose interest in the idea completely if such a stadium was to be built anywhere in the north that wouldn't be able to host the club he's just bought.

Exactly John.

This is all about a British tax exile wanting to use British taxpayers money for a stadium in Manchester, primarily for his football club, with a few other soccer games thrown in, in the soccer season.

I'm confused....he has used the plural "national stadiums"

Apart from Wembley being built in the nation's capital (a city with maybe 9 times the population of the next biggest city)....which other "national stadiums"  is he talking about having been built in say the last 100 years?

Probably the entire Olympic site - twice, on that one, which features the National Aquatics Centre alongside the velodrome and the stadium used for all national athletics events. Crystal Palace is the National Athletics Stadium which is no longer used as the national athletics stadium.

For starters.

Meh....that was a London Olympics though in fairness not UK

If any sport should have a national stadium it's ours

I'd be all for the government funding the mythical new Odsal into a 30,000 national RL stadium

Manchester had the velodrome and from what I can tell it is still used. The National Speedway Stadium in also in the North, at Belle Vue Manchester.

The National Curling centre is not in the South either.

If he wants a football stadium he should build it.

And that, children, is why London and the south gets all of the - far, far too little - investment.

"Oh no, none of that for us, thank you very much."

What nonsense. There is only investment for 1 stadium in each sport, Wembley have tied the FA into a long term deal so you wouldn't many matches elsewhere. This isn't about a National Stadium it's about united wanting someone to pay for their ground. If they get rid of the parasitic owners they would generate their own income to do so.

Like I say, if you want events to come to the north and generate jobs for Manchester - then you're going to need state investment.

If you want to miss out because you hate soccer or hate Man United or whatever - maybe, like some on here, you believe state investment is somehow cheating - then go ahead.

I get that but if the FA have a 20 deal with Wembley what games are going to be played in the North. 1 a year when the Americans take over? The stadiums already built are more than good enough. United could build an 80,000 stadium if the Glazers didn't hock the club.

Investment is needed in transport links and so many other areas

It doesn't just need to be football matches. Don't think a major new venue could tempt the NFL - especially if a new ground got some decent infrastructure as part of the development - for example?

Maybe not but remember the fuss United made after a single game on their pitch. I am all for a multi purposes stadium but premier league teams should build their own

Sorry gingerjon, but I'm with Red Willow on this one.

Besides, I think you are underestimating the draw of London. To lots of foreigners, England begins and ends with London. If the government can't afford to finish HS2, how could they justify building a new OT, or Anfield or Etihad or Villa Park or St James Park. The North needs proper investment, not vanity projects for wealthy people.

The government chose not to afford HS2.
