Yeah I can well believe that. It's packed in general but I'd love to be there to witness this.

The Vegas event isn't about growing the game in America, it's about giving the NRL a massive, high-publicity season launch extravaganza, to help in it's real battle which is the domestic war with AFL for TV and sponsorship dollars. There's a small secondary goal of getting a small sliver of the US in-game betting market, but even that is a "nice to have" not the purpose.

It makes 100% sense on that basis, and is a piece of aggressive marketing genius from V'Landys

Rick Astley

One of the music industry’s most distinctive voices, Rick Astley has left an indelible mark on pop-culture since his emergence into the limelight nearly three decades ago. With well over 40 million records sold, and an enviable back-catalogue of chart-topping hits, Astley remains one of the most successful solo artists to have ever emerged from the UK. Exploding into mainstream consciousness with the multi-million-selling phenomenon 'Whenever You Need Somebody', Astley holds the distinction of being the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top Ten.

I'd wager 99.8% of Americans wouldn't recognise Rick Astley if he farted in their face.

Correct, but his 30 second clip is aimed at rugby league fans in this country right?  Don’t think he’s going is he?  Think it’s just more Wire marketing “genius”.

Looks like he had two number 1 singles in the US charts (one of which was 5x Platinum) plus three other top ten hits in the US. Over 1 billion streams on Spotify, approaching 2 billion views on YouTube. I reckon he's a fair bit more famous in the US than you think. (Edit - to add that he was a guest at the Oscars, performed at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, was on the Larry King show in 2017.)

You're a not a fan of his full set of Smiths covers then 😉 ? Morrissey seems to like them.

The biggest selling UK singles artist of the 1980s 🙂 And people say music was better in the olden days...

Most people I know over here know him as a part of the 'rick rolling trend'. You can learn more about it here ;)

But, having said that. It would still only be a small percentage.

Anyway, looks like Rick Astley actually posted last July that he was a Wire fan and looking forward to see them playing in Vegas.

Last year the attendance was 40K with a big take up in the last couple of weeks from local sales, so it looks like they will get a record attendance, although Wire and Wigan will be responsible for a chunk of that. Ticket prices are also markedly higher this year so event revenue should be up too.

Occasional references in US TV shows, too (Family Guy springs to mind)
