Off to see Opera South East's take on The Elixir of Love (they're doing it in English) this evening. They're a fun mix of ancient volunteers still with good voices and young would-be professionals just starting out - and basically no one in the middle.

Just got back from watching Blondie at Halifax Piece Hall. Soaked but really happy.

Debbie Harry's voice has dropped an octave but she's still got the voice  and personality to rule the show. The band was ultra tight and they are no tribute act.

For those about to rock . . .

Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins last night at Coop live. I was there for the former but stayed throughout: not a fan of such huge indoor venues but you have to go where the bands choose to perform. I enjoyed Weezer, Pumpkins less so, both were just song after song with little interaction however, which felt a bit disappointing. Nature of the beast I guess to some extent when you have a co-headlined gig, which means long sets from both acts.

I hate them - arenas are so soulless - the Leeds one is like a giant asda- but your not gonna get Springsteen playing at the Brudenell  (not the real one anyway)

Miles Hunt acoustic set tonight at Todmorden Unitarian Church, a Grade 1 listed building that was declared redundant in the late 80s. Apparently the first gig of any size they've hosted; good luck to them as a cracking venue and great night out.

Just got home from the Manics and Suede at the Llangollen International Eistedfodd, an excellent night that I'm going to get to repeat in Cardiff and Manchester the next two Fridays.

It was my 26th time seeing the Manics, who were great as always and played quite a changed set from the last tour, but it was my first time seeing Suede and I was very impressed. Brett Anderson is some frontman, didn't miss a note even when he was down in the crowd and was drenched through by the end of the set.

Added to that, I even got recognised by someone for my own musical endeavours! That's always fun 🙂
