Looks like a good acquisition and it was the one area we looked a little lighter in. Must admit when we published the squad earlier in the week I thought that was it for new signings so this feels like a real bonus. Well done to the club for the ambition being shown and the level of investment giving us fans something to get enthused about.

Just as a minor update to one of last season's squad, there are multiple reports that Ben Nakubuwai, who played for us on loan in 2024, is back training at Leigh, where he supposedly still has another year on his contract. Whether he stays there or gets loaned out again somewhere remains to be seen.

He was loaned out due to his quota status wasn't he, and that Leigh had gone over the limit. I'm not sure what their squad status is currently, so he may or may not be available.

Leigh fans seem to think he's contracted to them for next season and if that's the case a lot will depend on their quota status which again seems up in the air. What happens to him this year will probably depend on how desperate they are to get him off the quota, can't see us or another Championship club wanting to pay him at his SL salary, I thought he went ok for us last season but Championship looks his level. On paper King V looks a like-for-like replacement for him.

In LRL's rundown of every SL club's import situation, Leigh are one of only two clubs who have a quota spot available.

Presumably, Nakubuwai is training on, knowing he might be squeezed out if a "better" player becomes available from the NRL before the start of the season.

Quote

Leigh Leopards – 6/7. It’s an off-season with plenty of change for Leigh, who have lost overseas stars John Asiata (Hull FC), Tom Amone (Canterbury Bulldogs), Kai O’Donnell (North Queensland Cowboys) and Ricky Leutele (TBC) as well as Matt Moylan, who announced his retirement upon the conclusion of their 2024 campaign.

In their place, the Leopards have so far recruited NRL stars David Armstrong (Newcastle Knights), Isaac Liu (Gold Coast Titans), Ben Condon (Manly Sea Eagles) and Tesi Niu (Dolphins), leaving them with one vacant quota spot.

The Leopards also have Lachlan Lam and Ethan O’Neill – both born and raised in Australia – on their books: but the pair don’t count on quota due to playing some of their junior rugby in the UK whilst their fathers (Adrian Lam and Julian O’Neill) were playing in Super League in the early 2000s.

Contracted: Edwin Ipape (2025), Ben Condon (2026), Isaac Liu (2026), Aaron Pene (2026), David Armstrong (2027), Tesi Niu (2027)

Condon is now rumoured not to be coming meaning Nakubuwai would be the 6th quota player right now, though there seems little doubt they will add at least 1 more. You'd think he'll stay at Leigh for as long as Leigh have only 7 quota players (including him) as presumably Leigh would need to pay some of his salary for him to go elsewhere eg (plucking a random figure) if he's on 50k and a Championship team are happy to pay him 30k Leigh would need the find the other 20k...which probably wouldn't be worth it unless they need him off the books for another quota player.

Ok. Let's imagine he takes a quota spot for now. He can't be in their first choice 17. So, I'd like to think we'd be near the front of the queue if and when he's loaned out by Leigh. Hopefully he enjoyed his time at Fev in 2024

Journalist John Davidson has linked Connor Wynne with Hull KR, saying they are keen to sign him for the forthcoming season (no link as it's behind a paywall). Obviously i have no idea if there's any truth in it.

Wynne's made no secret of wanting to get back to SL if the opportunity occurred, I know it would upset a lot of fans if he went but we have a lot of options at wing and given he signed a new contract only last month you'd presume a transfer fee would be involved as with Reynolds last season.

Now Matt Shaw has outlined the same story, but with a subtle difference - he says HKR want to sign him for 2026 (clubs can start negotiating now with the new December 1st deadline replacing the old May 1st one).

John Davidson is a terrible journalist that only posts half truths and revels in non-SL clubs struggling. It's no surprise that Matt Shaw's article contains more information.

It would be good if we had a junior side at whatever level , instead these young keen lads just drift away

I wonder if we're still 'in' with Fev Lions ?

From the news report PH has said no more signings so what  we see on page one is what we get having that it looks like a well rounded squad and from a fevnut posting we seem to have multiple player for each position which should benefit us  when suspensions and injuries raise their ugly heads and hopefully when it comes to the fun part of the season we will be firing on all cylinders and not running on empty I t will be interesting to see if Fordy rotates players or sticks with his preferred 13 personally I hope it's the former

Apparently we looked at 4 middles before plumping for King so with a bit of luck all the new players we've brought in are the real deal Any way as far as recruitment  goes I'll leave it to Porky Pig

Well, that's all folks...... for now, in the modern world of rugby league. We started last season with a squad of 24, signed EIGHT further players during the season, saw EIGHT of the original 24 depart at various stages of the year. We also had 14 loan and DR signings.

So I doubt these 27 will all be with us all year, and we'll always be open for good players to strengthen the squad.

No word as to whether we will be doing DR in 2025 yet either.
