Last night I came across the Motörhead song ‘1916’ for the first time.  Why have I never heard this song before?  Young men volunteering to fight for their country and having no idea of the reality of war.  So incredibly moving.

As an aside I am currently working my way through the top 50 Albums of all time - in term of sales - in the UK in reverse order.  Worked my up, or should that be down, to number 11, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

I have the 1916 album. It also includes the riotous Going to Brazil and the tribute song Ramones.

Plenty of other bangers too.

Basically, get the whole album - it's a good'un.

Cheers Futtocks.  Played the album today whilst I was driving through the Barossa Valley.  Lovely warm sunny day, windows down, music full blast, what a great way to finish the week ……. I am hoping some of my hearing returns tomorrow😄

Great album, Going to Brazil was a Motorhead live staple for years and rightly so. Always introduced by Lemmy with "You like rock 'n' roll don't you?". R.A.M.O.N.E.S was usually introduced with "We were going to stop playing this live but they keep dying".

After going through Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler's discography, I believe these to be the best five songs written:

  1. Where Do You Think You're Going? (1979)
  2. Tunnel of Love (1980)
  3. Brothers in Arms (1985)
  4. Sultans of Swing (1978)
  5. What It Is (2000)

In my opinion one of the greatest songs ever written.

In the 90s, I got lots of stuff by mail order from American independents and their distributed labels. The likes of Touch and Go, Alternative Tentacles, Kill Rock Stars.

Bought in bulk due to the cost of the bank cheque. Balanced out economically because CDs over there were about half the price of the UK. Allowed me to take more chances on previously unheard artists.

The first box from Kill Rock Stars in 1995 included the self-titled Elliot Smith album. Still quite lo-fi at that stage. Potential more than fulfilled on later records.

Also in that KRS order were early releases by Sleater-Kinney and Unwound, two of my favourite bands of the decade.

I can't believe none of you told me about 'Spoon" before. I thought we were friends.

Just discovering a whole new world of music, they are fantastic.

Re my previous post -

Merge were one of the labels distributed by Touch and Go. An early noughties order from them contained the Spoon album "Girls Can Tell". Instant classic, almost Sgt. Pepper-esque.

2024 seems to have been the year of collaborations for Babymetal. This just got released - their appearance in Bloodywood's new single Bekhauf.

After the big split in 10cc, when Godley and Creme left, the hits became less frequent and then dried up altogether. Dreadlock Holiday was the last major hit. The last 5 albums no hits, a pity. This is classic 10cc , shame it went unnoticed.

Been skimming through some old material. Rather disconcerting to find how often one has repeated oneself.

Question for @Futtocks -

When I mentioned the Judee Sill doc on the radio thread, did you remember posting the above? Because, despite liking and replying, I have no recollection whatsoever.

Well worth reposting, "The Kiss" is transcendent.

Elizabeth Cotten was born this day in 1893. Best known for the folk blues standard "Freight Train" written while she was in her early teens, she won a Grammy for a live album at the age of 90. This is her at only 72:
