First Swansea and now Wigan winning a major domestic cup for the first time in the same season and surely a first for the sport?

I think it's a symptom of the fact that it is far more important from a financial standpoint to finish well in the Premiership than to win a cup. Top teams typically play squad players and reserves in the early rounds of the cups.

The rotating of squad players has been going on for some considerable time though!

Man City didn't put out a reserve team; Bradford beat the best available of both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Some teams might rotate to avoid injuries in the cup but it's not that normal, particularly in the latter stages.

Yes, Soccer is bigger practically everywhere. I just hate people who get nasty if you have the nerve to prefer another sport. And people like that cockney latic make me laugh they are so insecure. Its not enough that almost everywhere is dominated by soccer, you have to prefer it or they get nasty.

What really bugs me is the attention paid to soccer on non- sport TV.  "Pointless" - a programme I watch at tea time with my wife invariably has at least one questiion connected with "footbow"  and there are always a couple who say they like "footbow"  Very rarely are there any questions on other sports.  Obviously "footbow" questions invariably put women contestants at a disadvantage and result in their being eliminated.  As my wife says there are never any questions about knitting! ;)

Fantastic result for Wigan yesterday, but they've got it all to do to save themselves from relegation now, given that almost all the teams around them got decent results this weekend (aside from Villa, of course). Lets see what their crowds are like in the Championship next season…

The last episode of Pointless I saw had no questions about football but one about Super League. 100 people had 100 seconds to name as many teams in Super League in 2011: one team said Catalan, one said Harlequins. Can't remember which was lower but the lowest score was Crusaders.

Yes they need something from the Arsenal game on Tuesday otherwise they are down. Arsenal need to win to keep the Champions league place.

Oh well Martinez to Goodison it is then, no contract to buy out.

Wigan do what Brighton could have done.

I'm assuming that Shrek of this parish is smiling *very* broadly.

Indeed I am, can't smile wide enough and expect it to be that way for sometime regardless of how the rest of the season pans out!

I think that's true of every sports achievement compared to a predecessor event fifty years ago.

Sport is presented, and regarded with way too much importance.

We used to despise the likes of Cuba and East Germany because they were tinpot countries who used professional sportspeople to gain propaganda by winning medals. It worked internationally and was intended to give a sense of pride to their citizens.

Nowadays, successive UK governments have used the same sporting-success policy to camouflage their allowing the decline of the country in terms of world importance and industrial power.

The UK's sports successes are presented with a smile rather than a stare, but its still bread and circuses.

It was repeated tonight. Perhaps the Beeb read this forum?

1. I wish I'd put a tenner down when five years ago I predicted Moyes to replace Fergie on retirement.

2. Sad to see Mancini go but all was not quite as it seems. A whiff of player power in recent performances?

3. I wish league was as popular as soccer.

David Beckham announces his retirement. 19 trophies in 20 years is hardly chopped liver. I like him, he comes across as a decent bloke.
