Rain, rain and more rain

Eastbourne got £2m of public money to repair a pier. Cameron announced it personally.

Lib Dem / Tory marginal that. Can't think why they'd be getting the same amount of money for one, non-essential, thing. I'll have to look into it.

Surely you can't be suggesting the tories would act out of venality and self interest?

Wireform which is, I think the last manufacturing business in Hebden Bridge has announced it won't be reopening and its 45 employees are now jobless.

A guy I work with who lives in Hebden reckons 25 to 33% of the high st shops won't be reopening.

Could turn into a bit of a ghost town

BBC One Show is coming live from Hebden Bridge as I write. Shoulder  of Mutton

Anybody watching tonight's One Show from Hebden Bridge?

Obviously, no  government minister turned up but some glib government spokeswoman came on and said that the Tories had given £200million to the north of England to help flood-striken communities in the north of England.

Cut to a couple who had been flooded out of their house and won't be able to return for nine months or so. They had been given £200 by the TSB and £500 by Calderdale Council.

If you add together the various £50 millions announced in stages plus flood defence funding, plus the repair work (which central government pays after a threshold is reached) plus council tax relief and small business rate relief and the £1 million given to the Cumbria Foundation flood appeal, etc, etc, then £200 million won't be that far off.  By its very nature most of the money given in flood relief and repair will be for infrastructure work and so individuals won't see much of that at all in their own pockets.  What is in the pockets of the people will come from their own insurance company in the main, once the immediate needs are met (like food, clothes and housing).

The cost to Cumbria alone is estimated to be £500m to £600m - and then there's Lancashire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, etc, etc.

If the Govt is providing £200m - where's the remaining say £700m coming from for the north

This Govt has got into the way of just giving a soundbite with x£m included in it, in the hope that people just swallow it

I think you'll find from stories such as the one below that the government is spending far more than £200 million on the winter floods.  They have already allocated £40 million to fixing the A road in the Lake District that was washed away.  And they have allocated £50 million each to Cumbria and Yorkshire for initial cover.  Under an agreement, the name of which I have presently forgotten, central government meets all costs over a threshold amount and so I would imagine as yet the government doesn't actually know what it will be paying out as the costs won't yet be fully known.

Good chance that Rochdale town centre is going to flood again.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

2 posts deleted, one original, one quoting it in exasperation.

Come on... give it a break, please.

It's an eery sound, especially when you can hear it up on the hillsides as it echoes around the valley. We live about a mile out of Hebden Bridge, but 1000ft above sea level, and you can hear it clearly every time it is sounded, such as this afternoon.

I don't think things are 2015 bad yet, but still pretty high?

No, very little breached, fortunately. That said, for all the work that is being done locally, allegedly it wouldn't stop the 2015 level flooding anyway, as it's modelled on the 2012 flooding...
