Putting money in the women's game (was: Wigan Warriors: Bankrupt)

Must be the only explanation as to why they're not paying someone for doing what is essentially a full-time role.

I hope that Leeds Rhino's decision to pay their players will start something where the women's game enters the payed ranks. At first it'll probably be semi pro but hopefully the crowds to these games will increase to generate the revenue needed.

This is common at clubs outside of the first team. I know of people who have done these type of roles for academies for instance on a voluntary basis.

The only danger with this is when only a couple of teams pay players the league will get disjointed. There isn’t the money or talent for a full professional league yet.   Central contracts for your elite players may work, but you may have to limit numbers per club to keep SL interesting

The league already is pretty disjointed. In part that appears to be because some clubs are 'professional' (not necessarily in payment terms but in outlook) and others are running as sub-community operations.

The posted advert looks incredibly demanding for a volunteer role. Do it all and do it right and you'd have no hours left in the week for an actual job.

These girls deserve to be paid, the women's game has come on leaps and bounds. As you alluded to central contracts for the top players could be a way forward,I think they do that in union.

Certainly looks a full time role from the list of tasks and activities. If anyone feels strongly this should be paid, then maybe tell Wigan.

Too right it looks full time. Anyone can flog themselves for nothing. It's strange that Leeds are actually paying there women's team . It truly makes you wonder whether there are money problems at Wigan or they are tight.

IMG will sort all this out.

The OP will sort it out. He's clearly interested in the job to have found it in the first place.

How will they sort it out?

If I knew, I'd've applied for the job myself. But I have every faith in them.

It's not a job.

Some alignment needs to be done in the Women’s game (on and off the field)  I do think they thought slapping the SL name on the comp would be enough, however like any elite league there needs to some standards maintained, I do think they’ll get there, just hope there aren’t any casualties along the way

In regards to the role Having done the role myself for an NCL team I’d  tend to agree - there is a lot more on that list than I did, and what I did took up a lot of time. I do think they’ve overstated the role a bit or like you said should be a paid job

The reaction from Wigan fans to this on social media has been overwhelmingly negative, so hopefully the club take that on board. I know it's not just Wigan who do this. Most clubs still operate roles in the women's game on a voluntary basis and don't pay players a wage, but this seems like a lot of work for someone to be doing for nowt.

When i look at our women's rugby league team, training hard, sacrificing other things in their lives. They truly deserve some sort of financial recompense for their efforts.

This is the kind of thankless job that is carried out each week by the shrinking army of volunteers in the community game. No reward and a reduction of enjoyment due to rising workload each season.

Do the women’s team bring any money into the club though? If not I can understand why they’re not making this a full time role (though I’d like to think they’ll be remunerated in some way at least).

That's not what he's here for.

He rarely discusses RL or anything to do with it.

So disappointed , I thought it might be true 😂

This however backs up my opinion that ATM the women's game should remain community based , and not be fully affiliated with the Pro clubs
