French Referee banned for 3 years

Recommended Posts

So the lunatic French referee from the wheelchair final who had a hissy fit has been banned for 3 years.

"Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup final referee Laurent Abrial suspended until 2026
"[His] conduct was prejudicial to the interests of both IRL and FFR13 (French Rugby League Federation)."

He explained that the rules in France and UK aren't the same for abled bodied players projecting their chair. That's why he started to get annoyed. That's why he kept doing the thrusting movement and in France a couple of tries wouldn't have counted, that's what they're saying in France anyway, I know the ref very well. I don't think he'd want to ever ref again so the ban won't make much difference. His actions where terrible though and he should be banned.

What?? Different countries have different interpretations of the laws?

Surely not!

Good. What an absolute plonker he was. Very unprofessional. I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing when he was doing his weird stuff in the final.

What he should probably have done is read the rules of the sport he was about to referee in, I`m not sure him not knowing a rule is any kind of reason to have a little baby hissy fit like he did, it was embarrassing and pathetic.

To be fair - it was entertaining.

And IMG is looking for new ways to raise the profile of the game.......

So he admits he was a ref in the final game of the comp and didn't know the rules the game was played under? That's worse ! He admits incompetence.

Should the governing body not make sure all refs knows the rules? The English and French had different interpretations of the same rule I believe, of course he's incompetent most refs in France are, especially at the lower levels, there's about 50 refs in the whole of France.

I'm not defending him, just giving a reason why he could have cracked up like he did.

He was a u15s ref and a touch judge in elite in abled body RL. He ended up reffing wheelchair rugby in France as they needed refs and not many refs wanted to do it as a lot of travel is involved.

He didn't give me the impression he was impartial. He says it was different rule interpretations. Either way, his reaction was embarrassing.

It takes wisdom to know when a discussion has run its course.

It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

This even made the news on Absolute radio on Friday, surely the first time they’ve ever mentioned Rugby League.

RL is only newsworthy if it's negative story.

For once we can say with absolute confidence that the ref was as bent as a nine bob note!

Not sure you can say that on here MOK. Expect a ban yourself.
