Very annoyed this morning! Woken up to the news that my favourite burger van has been banned from the city centre because "it has an adverse effect on the overall character of the city centre".

For many years,  frying onions was banned in Cambridge city centre, allegedly because Norman St.John Stevas, who was master of Emmanuel college (where he was nicknamed Mein Camp) didn't approve of the smell. So the burger and hot dog vans couldn't do onions with the food.

WTF is wrong with those idiots next door? They must have a constant stream of plasterers, plumbers, etc round to their house. It’s only a tiny house, how can one house warrant so much work? They are deranged.

Are you sure it's not a porn set and they have a workman fetish? Different sort of banging...

Why do my builders not have builders bums like that?

I'm going to regret saying that, aren't I?

My next door neighbour is almost always drilling, must be so many shelves up in that house.

They're very quiet when they're up though!

Friends writers regret not having more ethnic representation on their show ,Little Britain pulled from iplayer/Netflix for portraying certain groups of people in a bad light and writers apologising for doing so , When will it end .Right throughout British television history comedy has never been what you could call PC .So while their at it why not bin Monty Pythons , Rising Damp , Till Death us Do Part , Spike Milligan , Peter Sellers , etc. you could go on forever . That was then this is now , you learn from your mistakes and move on , you can`t erase whats already gone if you do you wouldn`t have much left .

Couldn’t agree more , bloody ridiculous . Very slippery slope to go down . You missed out Fawlty Towers and Porridge , ‘Sonny Jock ‘ . Did I see somewhere Gone With The Wind has been took off ?

Do we pull every film ever where a white person was made up as a non-white person? None would be acceptable now, but were at the time.

For example, Breakfast at Tiffany's with Mickey Rooney playing an asian man in a frankly insulting and outrageous way that would never get broadcast in a modern film.

I genuinely don't know the answer to this. We'd have a lot of content cut if we went down that line, but then is it still acceptable to be there now we know better?

I'm confused...

This can’t be the answer , it just can’t . Where do you stop ? Surely you can only learn and take things from where you are , history is of its time , you can’t delete it . This kind of censorship can’t be right , in fact it could just stoke further division . I was thinking of so many programmes and films ... Carry On for instance !  As I say it can be a slippery slope , and who decides all this ? And works of art , buildings , books ?

I genuinely have no clue on the answer to this. Unfortunately, many people are making binary decisions, shooting from the hip.

Indeed , and in the current climate there’s gonna be very little pushback as no one dare . It’s gonna be a brave man to say ‘ stop that’s silly ‘

I've always preferred what was done on Looney Tunes/Tom and Jerry home releases which has a little text warning saying they "may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the Warner Bros. view of today's society, these shorts are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."

Yes, this is the answer.

I'm not a fan of censorship of TV/Movies of any kind (legal activity) I think as long as the warnings and context are there anything is fair game.

And tbf, that is what HBO Max will be doing.

On the likes of Little Britain, I think the BBC have every right to disown it, which is in effect what they have done by pulling it from all platforms. There are loads of programs that we don't show now, see "it was alright in the 70's" for example. But there may be a place for it with all the BBC branding removed and sold onto a private distributor.

But you can’t just say yes that one .... because it doesn’t stop . There’s loads and loads of tv shows and movies you can go through and say we’ll disown them . We can agree on the need for honest debate and structural change ... but is this the answer ? I don’t think so , and you don’t know where that path ends

The BBC as a commercial body can just decide that though.

I've seen various public figures pressured on social media to condemn other public figures. A recent one was various food writers being asked to call out Giles Coren* as a racist. If they demur, then the pressure just increases on them. This sort of thing encourages people with a certain mindset, who see hounding famous people (whether deserved or not) as their calling.

*who does, admittedly, come across as a pretty dreadful human being.

It is interesting that actions become knee-jerk rather than considered and well discussed. Then again that won't make it stand out anywhere in the UK.

The statues in question are fascinating ones where a benefactor to a town or university has been recognised but they will also contain where that ability has been funded by their dark behaviour. Saying do this along the right lines is a non-starter because when people did this they were sidelined, ignored and patronised. Is a history something we should be proud of? And should our monuments speak about what we're proud of and demonstrate our moral and social attitudes?

If you think that such statues are perfectly okay for whatever reason would you be as happy with a statue for Jommy Saville for all his charity work or a Monument to Rolf Harris for all his work for the Arts?

And what about statues of Hitler and swastikas being on show in Germany and Austria after all it was a significant moment in, and he was a very tangible part of, their history?

Of course I'm exagerating some of this but not a great deal in slaver's part in our story and it's also a complete lie to say it was a different time and that's how people thought then. There is plenty of evidence to show that not everyone felt it was all okay and not all of them were quiet about it at the time.

Where will it all end ?

At the point where our streets are not full of statues for people who kept their christianity and humanity in the bank. These are simple moral and human questions and have little to do with anything else.
