Futtocks
It has been brought to my attention that I, and many others, have been showing signs of not being sufficiently patriotic. So I would like, following my short and entirely pleasurable sojourn in the lower floors of the Ministry of Love, to release the following statement: I pledge allegiance to Theresa May (or whoever is PM next week), and all who sails in her. Every day, she demonstrates her strength and stability by her selfless refusal to meet the public and put up with their insultingly reasonable questions. Give us this day our daily Brexit. And if anything goes wrong, it's all the fault of those rotten foreign types, and not our skilful negotiators. It has been proven by scientists (or, at least, people who can spell the word 'scientists' correctly two times out of three) that Jeremy Corbyn is Satan incarnate and, furthermore, that Andrea Leadsom is a jolly good sort, the likes of which we could do with more of. UKIP's Nigel Newsnight is also a sound chap, especially when it comes to tacitly condoning race hatred. The majority* of the media are all biased against the only true fact, which is that questioning authority is bad, really bigly bad, okay? *excepting that tiny, powerless minority led by Murdoch, Dacre, Rothermere, Barclay & Barclay, who are the only ones that guard the flame of truth... and it is just a wild coincidence that what they tell us to think is also what will make them richer. Shame on you for even thinking that! Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. Don't expect people to understand this in Devil take the Hindmost world! Some think of patriotic means my country right or wrong which is just another definition for stupidity, The same people aspire to scepticism in almost every other case. But that's just another example of people being able to keep two contradictory ideas in their heads at the same time and live quite peacefully with it all. Other than that patriotism is just a word some people like to use because they feel their views truly represent the British Way ( sort of pre-Columbus American Way but without Superman). Just to set the record straight I feel I won the lottery to have been born in England, that I won it twice to have been born in the North, and Being a TGG fan on top of that makes me one of the luckiest B#ggers in the Universe. But I never stand for the queen because she's managed to get to Ascot for every year of her reign and has barely been seen at a TGG event. I support everything that soldiers do for us even when the cause is wrong, but I'm a pacifist mostly. I don't believe in Trident because a nuclear deterrent is not played out by countries with the pathetic amount of missiles that we can afford and the money could be put to far better use. For me that means the NHS and schools for Tories that seems to mean a tax rebate. In other we are all complex contradictory human beings and no one has a monopoly on patriotism, any more than they know for certain what's best for Rugby League. As for them using "English" instead of "British", they have a curious blindspot when it comes to the geography of the British Isles. For most Greeks, "English" is just a commonly used term for "British". If pushed, they do know that there are four different, though connected, countries. 'Anglia' is easier to say than 'Megali Vretania' ('Αγγλία' and 'Μεγάλη Βρετανία' transcribed). Also, they tend to think of England as London, many of them having visited London, but never having ventured north. Rethymno Rugby League Appreciation Society Founder (and, so far, only) member. tonyXIII
As for 'patriotism', I never trust people who claim to be patriotic. Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel (cf. Mr Farage). Personally, though I would not shout about it, I do think Great Britain is the best country in the world and does not deserve some of the vilification it has received of late. IMO, most of the rotten things my country has done were not considered rotten at the time and only appear rotten now, when judged through the prism of the present. I am British and proud of the fact. I just prefer to live in Greece where I find the weather and lifestyle more to my liking. Rethymno Rugby League Appreciation Society Founder (and, so far, only) member. We lost our way a bit up in the mountains and stopped in a village to check the map an elderly Greek gent tapped on the window and using what little English he had, and it wasn't much, pointed us in the right direction. He asked if we were German (don't know why), when I said Ochi Anglika (No English) his expression changed to a warm smile and a a nodding acknowledgement. Wherever I have been in Crete the British are always held in high regard. Though I haven't been to Marmaris.
