That is a brilliant film. It’s a bit dated now (more because it looks like a glorified TV movie and the script is properly “theatre” really) but it is funny and I nick lines from it all the time.

The Club is based on a play written by one of Australia’s most prolific playwrights, David Williamson.

Not necessarily the best. These are just some I’ve enjoyed (sometimes again) over the last few years.

I, Tonya

Dodgeball

Rocky

Free Solo (documentary)

Crackerjack

BMX Bandits (very old and retro)

Cannot believe it took a page and a half for someone to mention Slapshot. Love that movie.

So...
1. Raging Bull

About a bull headed approach to live, the brutal approach suited to the ring. Not about sport.

2.Chariots of Fire

Not seen it

3.This Sporting Life

We are British and rugby league fans. The message is so similar to Raging Bull, that what works on the sports arena does not work in life, that you could think one was a remake. Comes top because British, rugby league and Richard Harris. Not about sport. A great film, but a little wooden and dated which keeps it off the top.

4. The Damned United

Personalities not fitting. But, it does actually seem to be about football And good. A rare combination.

5.Rush

About two differnt approached, with a made up personallty rift. Great fun. Not really about sport.

6.Fighting with my family

About relationships and personal goals. But, not really about wrestling.

7 .Gregory's Girl

Rather good

8.Bull Durham

9.Belleville Rendezvous

10.The Keeper.

The Bert Trautman story he goes from being a German prisoner of war (at Burtonwood I think). He then gets picked up by St Helens town and eventually goes on to play for Man City.  And shows football films can be good.

Honourable mentions:

- White Men Can't Jump, essentially about faith and trust. Not basketball.
- Rollerball, sadly dated. Tries to make the sport actually matter with more violence, but this only works occasionally also Hunger Games, Gladiator
- Bend it like Beckham, not about football
- Jerry Maguire, about drive and money, not sport
- Looking for Eric, it just so happens that Cantona played football.
- Field of Dreams, about Father and sons.
- Moneyball, about innovation, statistics, and pragmatism, but mainly statistics.
- Le Mans 66,

Dishonourbale mentions:
- Rocky, silly and inexcusably so when Raging Bull was released a few years earlier. Indestructable fighter wins world title by luck and finally trying.
- Mike Bassett  - England Manager, Like almost all football movies, just rubbish. See Escape to Victory, The Arsenal Stadium Mystery and When Saturday Comes

The Keeper would sneak into my top 10. Whether that’s partly due to the St Helens connections I’m not sure but I enjoyed it anyway.

Why hasn't anyone suggested The Arsenal Stadium Mystery?

Oh, I remember now; it was rubbish.

I love the bit where the radio commentary is not watching the game, and misses a goal, just pushing adverts, so Eddie Hemmings. Vacuous, commercialism.

Was just trying to think of something a bit different to put on this list and I thought of something I would definitely have on my top 10.

The Most Dangerous Game.

If you haven't seen this then watch it right now, just stop what you're doing and watch this film. Absolute classic.

I think that's the full film, it's only just over an hour long, if that link isn't right there are a couple of other uploads of it on YouTube.

Yes it is a sporting film. Hunting is a sport, the fact that it is about hunting humans for sport is irrelevant, it is still hunting for sport.

Interesting fact for you, this was made by the same people that made King Kong and was filmed at night on the King Kong jungle sets between filming that movie.

I was just looking at this sporting life on YouTube and reading the comments. 99% saying it's an absolute classic but I think it was only the second or third comment in and a football fan was slagging rugby league off, using the usual argument of how small time the sport is (not evidence for something being rubbish) and then just a few later a union fan having a dig. These same kinds of comments on anything remotely rugby league related gets so boring, perfect example of why this is the only place online I go on now to talk about the sport. Anyway, not important, just a little observation.

Without going through all the suggestions in the thread I would add:

The Fighter - true story of Mickey Ward and the greatest boxing fights v Gatti) I’ve ever seen.

North Face - (German + subtitles) mountaineering is a sport, I think!
