Behind the scenes documentary

If there was to be a behind the scenes documentary on a team in rugby league who would you want it to be? To me St Helens as a champion team could get a lot more interest from outside the game. Obviously any NRL team would get interest. But also think a Championship or League One team would be good for different reasons.

Good idea for a thread. A bit different.

Honestly I think the part time stuff would not work - would make the game look very "kitchen sink".

I think Wigan would be the one. It has to be somebody with half decent infrastructure (training facilities, stadium etc) and Wigan for me seem to have a culture of excellence among their youngsters etc that carries on right up to their first team. I think that culture would show the sport in a good light throughout a documentary.

I would say Lee Radford's first few weeks at Castleford would make a great "Damned United" style documentary.

Yes, one about a winning team would be a bit tedious. You need failure and heartbreak and disasters, plus some stupidity, miscommunication and comedy, maybe a bit of hope and success and finally a shocking ending.

The documentary of Radford's time at Hull is just begging to be made.

It seems Kitchen Sink is the most popular.

Netflix covered Sunderland soccer club,on a downward spiral, having had a money wasting, poor owner, who made bad appointments, and the popularity of the show, seemingly, were the long suffering fans, and some of the kitchen sink employees not employed on the playing/coaching side.

Therefore,probably,London Broncos,Keighley Cougars,North Wales Crusaders et al.

No reserves, but resilience, persistence and determination are omnipotent.

Gold Coast Titans have been in the past, it’s all on YouTube called “Building Titans” and it’s from the 2020 season and I think there was talk of Wests Tigers having the same but I don’t know if that ever got made.

The NRL moving to Queensland would have been a good documentary around any of the non-Queensland teams moving up to Queensland, especially the Warriors. Over here though, any of Saints, Wigan, Catalans, Toulouse, Featherstone, Leigh, London Broncos, London Skolars, Barrow, Cornwall or West Wales would have good storylines to them.

Cornwall, absolutely.

It was certainly a rollercoaster ride, good sports documentaries have definitely been made with a less interesting subject matter.

"Another Bloody Sunday" was a classic back in the day. 😀

42 years ago. The public's tastes have moved on a bit since then.

West Wales 2022 version could be interesting

On the contrary. I think hardly anyone would be interested in what is basically a pub side, who train one night a week.

It would make Rugby League look like a completely amateurish joke sport.

I think I saw a Melbourne one featured on my YouTube feed.

I’d love to see such a thing done pre-season, which would be a great way to build up the start of the season.
maybe start six weeks or so before the start of the season. Two shows a week, featuring all teams, and leading into the first game of the year televised on SKY/Channel 4.

it would be a quick turnaround for filming and editing but nothing that couldn’t quite easily be achieved with proper planning.

I think the ideal one to have let the public take a look at, would have been Toronto Wolfpack.

The uniqueness of their model would have been a bit of a differentiator from other sports teams, plus they had SBW who was the only Rugby League player in the SuperLeague that the general public might have actually heard of.

I'd really like to see a documentary on Richard Agar's coaching insights and philosophy.

It would run out of content before the first ad break.

Could have been sponsored by grooming products too

In 1980, people used to go into restaurants and order stuff like orange juice for a starter, followed by gammon steak. If you still do that, then fair play to you.

The wider viewing public however, won't share your outlook, and so a 1980-style documentary about part time rugby league teams playing on mud bogs in front of slag heaps is unlikely to generate any real interest in terms of viewer numbers, and certainly will not attract the sort of demographic that would be attractive to advertisers.

I think this is just wrong, you're trying, and failing, to twist your Rugby League agenda to a wider point.

Gritty reality remains of great interest to documentary makers.
