St James park

I know loads of people who were attending their first ever Rugby League match today.  It was definitely a much more local crowd than we get for Magic Weekend which feels dominated by Yorkshire/Lancashire.  There were still plenty of club RL kits around too.

I do feel the consistent Magic Weekend however has laid groundwork for big events in Newcastle.  The fact is though England is much more of a draw than club teams from elsewhere in the country than Newcastle.

If RL wants to grow it needs big games outside the heartlands like v Samoa today.  St James has hopefully established itself now as one of the primary homes for England moving forward.

I saw quite a few England Rugby Union tops today so a lot of players/ex players from the local clubs made the trip out.

You play internationals elsewhere because of the extra revenue generated by bigger crowds, to increase awareness and to appeal to sponsors.

Agreed in principle, but without the development of club games in those areas what good is it really doing? What is the extra revenue doing to help grow the game? Are we really bringing in extra sponsors because of the odd game in London? I’m as much of an expansionist as anyone, but there needs to be a strategy and there blatantly isn’t one.

The bbc made sure they focused on a few of them too. Unless there were so many that it was by chance.

Seemed a canny few as was talking to a few who enjoyed the experience and something like that wouldn't happened 30 years ago.

You think playing internationals elsewhere is solely to facilitate expansion. It's not. The game is crying out for extra revenue, I find your thinking just bizarre to be honest.

A test series game in Newcastle would be great but only downside is that it would probably have to be at the expense of a game in either Manchester or Leeds (given that one of the 3 games in a test series is probably going to have be in London)

And?

elland rd is a dump. Headingley, Huddersfield and hull are too small.

Just that it would be a shame for a test match not to played at either Old Trafford (biggest stadium in the North) or Elland Rd which a dump it maybe but Leeds is a major heartland of the game.

Like I said, a test match in Newcastle would be great and should be considered but the only shame would be that Manchester or Leeds misses out

As I said, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me boss. Plus I was replying to someone else saying it was about growing the game.

Nobody likes Elland Road, except the thousands who turn up every time there is a test match there.

Newcastle has perhaps dethroned Wigan/Liverpool/Manchester as a 3 match series host venue. Leeds and London remain our most consistent suppliers of good international crowds.

Manchester has always got as much if not more than Leeds. We've just not bothered playing internationals there for a long time.

Go with Manchester for the kiwis and if it bombs i.e. 30-35k go back to Leeds.

There are one or two reasons why St James Park is not suitable.

One will be the structural neglect that has resulted in discussion about moving the soccer club to another stadium.

Like some owners of rugby league clubs previous owners have not maintained the stadium.

However,as this involves the owners of the soccer club being the state of Saudi doing their sports washing this may not come to pass.

If the sport is so inclusive then the misogynistic, homophobic, murderous state may not be the best people to jump into bed with.

Yes,I know the government of this country supply Saudi with weapons of mass destruction, and they slaughter Yemeni people, but Amnesty International and others are upping the pressure.

If the government can suddenly...or not...apply sanctions against the Russians, they may eventually do likewise with Saudi, despite what happened with the Premier League.

Other stadia are available. There are even some mainstream journalists who have morals, ethics and principles. They write about what is going on...

Ok Manchester maybe, but lets be real our options over the past 20 years have been Greater Manchester, or "traditional Lancashire" rather than Old Trafford or tge Etihad, and we've still had our best attendances in Leeds and London

Should the RFL give the £25 million back to the government as well?

I don't get your lets be real comment. You mentioned Manchester and it has traditionally got good attendances, we just havent used it for a while. Not too many games have been played at Elland Road either, 3 England games in the last 2 decades have got 32k, 34k and 31k. You are trying to compare apples and pears comparing Elland Road to grounds with smaller capacities.

As I originally said I'm fine with Leeds being a choice, but based on crowds and stadium it's not a shoe in over Manchester if we can get the Etihad.

Sheffield United are also Saudi owned.  Don’t forget your outrage about the match v Greece at Bramall Lane.

Rather not have RL played in a billboard to a murderous dictatorship. When we signed the deal this wasnt the case so looks great but no.

The Etihad in Manchester?  The Emirates in London?  Bramall Lane owned by Saudi owned Sheffield United?

Amnesty International have plenty to say about the UAE in addition to Saudis Arabia, so I suppose you are also against all of the above stadia?

Or is your outrage only at Newcastle?
