RLWC - TV viewing figures

Just don`t get how that thrilling game could peak at 2.4m and average 1.4m. Does that mean ~1m turned off when England fell 10 points behind, a team they had walloped 3 weeks earlier and had to be odds-on to make a comeback. Or surely people weren`t just bored. Just don`t get it.

To be perfectly frank though, considering some on here were saying anything less than 4m for a final involving England, 1.4m for a semi is pretty disappointing.

I think the average includes the pre-game and post-game segments too, so I'd imagine there was close to 2m watching throughout the game itself.

There can also be multiple peaks, ie. There could have been over 2m at the start and other points of the game as well.

The average is across the entire broadcast, often includes pre, post & halftime, which can pull down the average, especially in the modern era.

It would be interesting to understand what the match reach was.

Huh - that's interesting. The big sport broadcasts in Aus, certainly NRL grand final / state of origin / AFL GF etc have separate "programs" for pre-match and post-match, to make average and peak ratings of the game itself so much higher. Could it be that way as the BBC isn't so ratings driven? Or is this just common to sports broadcasts in the UK?

Pretty much common like this in the UK now. For example, Monday Night Football on Sky (Premier League) runs from 7pm to 10.30pm with the match in the middle from 8pm to 10pm. But no break down within that in terms of programming.

Not yet, but I would surprised if the Wheelchair final does not hit more than 1.5m.

The RFL needs to move fast on Wheelchair and to find a way to monetise the numbers - not just letting BBC show it for nothing.

There's almost certainly a much more detailed breakdown of the figures, but you'd have to pay for that level of detail.

Didn’t i read the wheelchair final got 2.5 million?

That's a dream for most broadcasters - we'll bundle it with the Challenge Cup for £50k all in and think that is a good deal.

Because that is all they can be bothered to do.

100% England France plus two others. Four nations , four weeks. C4 , give us your money.

Yup - Group of 4 or even 5. Top two into final.

However, I would really like a 3 games series vs France for starters.

Bang that on Saturday night for 3 weeks in front of packed audiences.

I think I recall Jenna saying to an England player that almost 2m watched the final, haven't seen anything official yet.

An incredible 617 000 people got up in the middle of the night in Oz to watch the WC Final between Australia and Samoa. Other Australian men`s matches averaged 97 000, prompting Wayne Bennett to come out and say :

“Let’s stop the bulls***,” Bennett fired, after learning 617,000 people had tuned into Fox Sports and Kayo in Australia alone to watch the World Cup final between the Kangaroos and Samoa.

“It’s not that complicated.

“Everyone needs to think about what is in the game’s best interests here.

“We have to acknowledge where international football is heading.

Wayne Bennett is now backing a State of Origin eligibility overhaul so World Cup heroes who grew up in Queensland and NSW are not blocked from playing Origin in the future.

Is that 617,000 watching at around 4am NSW time?

That is properly impressive.

To be fair the Aussies arnt know for their education or intelligence and that includes basic counting.

They tend to lose track after they run out of fingers so they won't know if there were more than eight watching.

And everyone said a small nation like samoa making the final is bad for the game and it won't attract viewers. They were the most watched team in the world cup out of all the nations. The Kiwis needs to jump at this chance and play Samoa in Auckland. The Samoans in Nz are dying to watch the samoan team, it would be a sell

The match started at 3am NSW time and 2am QLD time, as they are a bit backward and don't have daylight savings ! 🙂

They are INCREDIBLE figures but I wonder if they include people who tuned in later via streaming?

BTW I watched it live on Kayo (streaming).

And yes, Fox Sports (and Kayo)  is the equivalent of UK Sky TV; it is NOT free-to-air.

There was no free-to-air coverage of the RLWC 2021(22) in Australia.

Hopefully those numbskulls at NINE will now sit up and take notice !!!!
