Challenge Cup: Third Round Draw

Recommended Posts

A lot of people are saying it should be played at wakey for the gate money for siddal.
I don’t think there’s a rule in place which entitles them to 50% of the gate, I believe it may be 30%. Also, if siddal can hold 1.5k (which I personally believe it could) and each person on average buys 1 food/drink item at £3.50 (don’t think that’s an unreasonable assumption) then the bar takings will be circa 5k, on top of gate receipts of around 2-3k. For a club like siddal that’s a season of travel covered so it’s no wonder why they want the tie!

While I am sort of hoping the game is played at Siddal as I can walk there pretty easily, there is a particular challenge with access to the ground (it's basically on a one-track road that is theoretically closed for thoroughfare) so I'd be surprised if the police were happy with a situation where several hundred, maybe even 1000, Wakefield fans, would be using it. I think that's more likely to be an issue than the facilities at the ground itself.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

The CC rules  re finance have changed but are contained at A3.18. The visiting team seems to get 30% of ticket sales. The home club keeps the rest.

Wakefield would not be allowed to pay Siddal to move the game elsewhere. ( competition rules )

I think though your figures are a bit off.

In Round 1  last year St Pats v Rose Bridge easily accomodated 2500k . It would make sense for this tie to be all ticket limited to  such a crowd.size .

The entry price has to be agreed between the clubs. Wakefield would want it as high as possible but  £5 or £10 per head would not be a steal - £3 was Siddals' entry fee for an NCL match last year.

I agree your bar/ hospitality profit and yes it will be costing their first team circa £8k to travel in the NCL this year.

Siddal have experience and acumen in their ranks. They will certainly be seeking to max this opportunity.....

I see Siddal are insisting on playing at home against Wakey. The RFL have stated the ground doesn't meet minimum requirements but still allowing this. If minimum requirements can be ignored what is the point in having them. The tin pot mentality of the RFL never ceases to amaze me.

Wakefield fans.....Ground minimum standards......

No. I won't.

Thatto Heath just confirmed on their facebook  page that their game against Featherstone will take definitely take place at their home ground Crusader Park .

They thank the local safety officer and the RFL  to get to this decision.as well as Featherstone for the help and patience shown by all.

Just read Siddal's page. They are confirmed as at home as well , all ticket £10 with concessions on sale from 8am tomorrow.

The spirit of the Challenge Cup lives on , at least at these levels.......

There were plenty of Wakefield fans speaking out in favour of Siddal's preferred option.  I'm in the early queue for a ticket as I post.

Accepting the rules? Very gracious. Some Championship fans think Wakey's new found millions and main stand have gone to their fans heads. 😂

Seriously though, following your team? Good stuff. All the best for 2024, except against Fev.

We (Barrow) had our moment in the sun in 2022 when we had the BBC here twice for Challenge Cup games - Barrow v Workington and after that, Huddersfield.

Personally, I'd prefer to miss out this time. I'm sure that the Huddersfield match being televised took a couple of hundred off the gate: There were barely 50 of their fans at the match: Might have been more if it hadn't been free on TV, but then again, some SL season ticket holders seem to resent having to stump up cash for cup matches.

There was a lot more than 50 Huddersfield fans at Barrow, there was 3 full coaches for a start, not to mention the independent travellers.

And we all enjoyed a fabulous day out at a ground not many of them had been to before and a lot of us hadn't been for many years.

That's what the cup should be about, not playing Salford or Wakefield for the 7th time in the same season.

Fair enough. They must have been spread around the ground. The group at the far end of the ground forming a small Kop was certainly around 50 (I counted them!).

I agree with you about the day out aspect. That's part of the magic of the cup.

I'd put the SL clubs in at Round 4, personally. What are they scared of?

Yeah I was airing on the side of caution with my figures but you do seem to agree roughly further down, I think they’d be silly not to charge at least £5 as people will pay it for a tie like that.

Though my main point which I wanted to get across was that Siddal hosting is better for them financially than Wakefield hosting which I think a lot of wakefield fans especially aren’t understanding. Good to see Thatto are hosting Fev, great set up

The contempt that some of their fans are treating Siddal with is a bit embarassing to be honest. I don't blame them about been excited for the season and for their future but its hard to forget that they peed money up against the wall for god knows how long playing in a stadium that made Odsal look state of the art and suddenly they are trying to make a mockery of an amateur club that has been infinatly much better managed than they have been for at least a couple of decades.

Absolutely spot on, as I said earlier, it’s a small but vociferous group of their fans on Siddal’s facebook page whinging about seats and disabled access.

they’re showing their club up with their wining

Just got my tickets for Siddal v Wakefield.

Can't remember the last time I had to queue for Challenge Cup tickets.

Might have been the 1987 final.

Same in Wakefield this morning.  Tickets and transport sorted.  Wonder if Wakefield will offer transport for all ticket holders and just drop off and return after game. 10 buses?

Maybe local residents can offer parking on their drives for cash, similar to Wimbledon when tennis is on. 🤔

There might not be a ton of parking actually inside the ground but theres plenty of street parking about, Park Lane is maybe a 500 yard walk or so away. Ive been to a ton worse grounds for on street parking like the old York ground used to be a total nightmare.

Wakey can expect a very physical game with many of the Siddal lads comfortably able to play Championship standard rugby if they so wished and the majority of them will have been at SL academies at one time or another. Its the sort of game that could set Wakey up for a good season and get them used to the more physical style of rugby that the Championship will offer compared to SL.

Whatever, it's going to be a great day up there and is the option I hoped Siddal would go for right from the draw.

Playing each other in an early round. It should be 32 teams into the bag and you take your chance.

Have I got this right, JB?  Your 'location' is London, but you can walk to Siddal "pretty easily".  I am hugely impressed by your fitness and stamina and, yes, not a little jealous!

Must admit I had no idea my location was set as London. I don't live there any more!
