https://www.totalrl.com/serious-injuries-could-occur-following-potential-challenge-cup-draw-of-community-clubs-against-super-league-sides/

Reading this, if there's possibility of a Super League team playing a community side, and the consequences of that, we can't talk about things like the "Magic of the Cup" and have those sides in, should we? Didn't seem to be any issues with full time Wakefield playing at Siddal anyway.

Also, a draw shown worldwide online is much better than just on TV in the North! Although, it would make a change not to have Tanya Arnold do everything on the BBC.

How rude.

Yeah, you'd imagine Wigan would give them a game at least. Etc.

We beat Wests Warriors last season 80-4, I think. Biggest cheer was when Wests scored. They certainly enjoyed their day, despite the weather. Why would you want to take that from them?

Bit of a lazy non-story article for me. If it is SL v amateur, we wont get the first 17 powerhouses playing, it'll be a very junior-heavy team with several first teamers getting training-run standard spells on the pitch. Regardless, I bet all the amateur players will be desperate to get selected for their team.

I notice how these conversations haven't cropped up in recent years when certain expansion League 1 teams have been drawn against SL teams who probably wouldn't be too far off the quality of an amateur team.

It is a dreadful article. First we have the publication defending Mark Aston. Now this negatively. Who needs enemies when we have a trade publication doing their work. Eastern Rhinos if they win would play an armed forces team who are likely to be a lot fitter than them. Why not write an article saying an armed forces team could meet a SL team and it would be great to see if there was any difference in fitness etc.

Very curious piece which makes no attempt to explain what the supposed danger is.

"It was reminiscent of the days when the Challenge Cup draw used to be made on a Monday evening and broadcast on the BBC Look North programme across the north of England.

If only we could see the Challenge Cup draw return to that degree of prominence!"

While there is an irritating consistency at how they do the draws, as far as I can remember most years draws for the later rounds take place on national BBC TV and/or radio, so have had greater prominence than regional TV.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

There is a reasonable, and positive, article to be run that, in terms of visibility, the Challenge Cup is the most visible club rugby in the UK.

There's too many long words and not enough ragebait in that though.

"Serious" about RL used to be a half-decent site but has been in steady decline for a while now.  All I ever see now is clickbait and dodgy "articles" like this one.

I get that it's off-season and they need to fill the void but even during the season they are not much better.

This article was written by Martyn, not SARL.

To be fair if you make the 3rd round you’ll have earned a game against Wigan, and I’ll be in Colchester to see it.

When playing at South London I played in the Challenge Cup 4 times IIRC.. it was the most amazing experience even if your playing teams you would normally play anyway, you feel the occasion, you feel part of the fabric of what is Rugby League (maybe that's me with my geeky history hat on).. the fact that you are a couple of wins from playing the big boys.. I don't care if they are going to muller us the fact you can turn around and say "we played against xyz" is an amazing thing to do as an amateur.

We have to be wary, of course, but the likes of Wigan aren't going to risk a freak "lazy" injury to one of their top players, or ban. But those top players should be there with the squad and therefore can meet and great the amateurs from Easter Rhinos which is a brilliant experience. Equally it reminds players at the top level of what is happening around the country.

I got to play at Wilderspool against Woolston and to be able to phone my grandfather from the pitch and talk to him from where he watched his heroes run out was brilliant (he would have been there but was ill).. that type of ability is what people play the game for at amateur level and for me its what would be sad if the cup became for the top leagues only.

Dont bemoan it, embrace it.

Yes. Being serious, the chances of us making R3 are tiny, and the chances of then drawing Wigan are tiny multiplied by small.

But drawing Wigan at home in R3 and taking it to the football stadium makes for about 25% of the lads' conversation so far.

Just being in R1 makes player/volunteer/sponsor recruitment much easier. Everyone is excited - love the CC.

Straying slightly from the subject of the thread (but I don't think it warrants a new one) - on the matter of publicity for cup draws, the draw for the first two rounds of the 1895 Cup are this afternoon. Is there any coverage of it anywhere?

Ruder still.

Hold my beer.  As Wests beat Rhinos 76 0 last season I doubt if there is much to worry about the teams fitness needs for R2. If they win it will be a bigger shock than Sheffield winning at Wembley.

100% the last bit is huge too... there'll be publicity to get from just the 1st round.. no union team can get this sort of thing going, its what can make a difference to player retention. It makes pre season more intense because you have an aim etc.. We found it a nice virtuous circle that recruitment went up, intensity went up, we got better which means you qualify the next year etc etc... for amateur clubs that have something about them it is a great vehicle for expanding the reach of the club.

True. And I wasn't being serious with my reply to you.

But 20-34 was the result at Colchester last year.

I did see that and they were only 6 points behind in the league. Good luck to them and as you say just to part of the competition is brilliant at this level. I refereed some early rounds games back in the day when Silk Cut were the sponsors and they would leave packs of ciggies in the dressing rooms for the players and the officials.

There's a few pictures that I recall, seeing players at Wembley celebrating or on the lap of honour with ciggies clearly visible in their hands, can't remember who? perhaps someone else can recall or better still post pictures.

My early memories of watching Wembley on the TV is David Coleman interviewing players who were always drinking milk.
