And the word actually originated in this country in the early years of the Football league simply as an abbreviation of 'association'.

So instead of constantly saying association football to distinguish from other forms of football, soccer was just said instead.

Indeed, Roy Race, Roy Race!, explained in a Q&A that it was soccer (Football to the Association Rules) to differentiate it from rugger (Football to the Rugby Rules).

Shamrock Rovers leading Molde 1-0 from the first leg in Norway.  2nd leg tonight on TNT Sports 2.

I hadn’t realised how close they were to getting an automatic spot in the top 8 during the group phase of the European Conference League.

I think them, Shelbourne and Bohemians (long trips from Czechia every week) would be the only Irish clubs I’d confidently guess at in a pub quiz.

Anyway hope they can do it!

I have a replica shirt for UCD somewhere in the Goose Nest from about 15 years ago, so can obviously name them! And then who else have we got? Derry City, Galway United, Cork City, St. Patrick's. That's 8 teams named between us.

Think St Patrick’s Athletic might be the big local derby for Shamrock Rovers in Dublin.

After the Scottish football half and half thing of the 80s, Football Italia craze over here in the 90s, then La Liga 00’s, followed by the German football fanatics in the 2010’s, maybe it’s the turn of Irish football for the hipster massive in England.

Not sure who I’d pick to follow - perhaps not a Dublin club but some provincial artisans who are in with a shout but unfashionable!

Have to do some research and lead the way!  Haha 😜

As I now follow Bohemians Prague because they wear green and their ground is lovely, I now have to follow Bohemian FC of the League of Ireland. Even though they don’t play in green.

The opening fixture of this year’s season was played at the Aviva in front of 30,000+. Bohs beating Shamrock Rovers 1-0. I assume, given it was a game deliberately chosen to get the biggest crowd, they would be the two biggest rivals in the league.

Nice one - that’s three of us at least with an interest.

Bohs - gingerjon

St Patrick’s Athletic - Gerrumonside Ref

Jusf done a quick bit of research and iooks like they’re playing currently in a funky Ajax home strip.

Their fans seem lively and have weird choices in friendships including Ravenna of Italy, Hannover 96 and, erm, Sheffield Utd!  But they’re nicknamed ‘the Saints’ which is my team in rugby league.

Anyine else care to adopt a League of Ireland team?  My aim is to start a brand new hipster movement for 2025 - their season is just a week old and the league is going through a boom.

Seen as UCD are in the second division at the moment, I'll pick Cork City to be my team, always a city I've fancied visiting some time.

3,264 saw Derry City fiendishly use their knavish tricks to beat the honourable Bohemians 1-0.

Bohemians play Liberec tomorrow in the Czech League.

I honestly didn’t realise this before adopting for life St Patrick’s Athletic (St Pat’s), but the pundits had them down as League of Ireland title favourites this year haha!

I guess it’s only right that I bask in their reflected glory for this year and maybe this year only.

And how did this fine stead ride in week 2 you ask?

Erm, downed 2-1 away at the hands of Galway Utd!

Sligo Rovers will pay next week for this insult! 😄

Right, got all me gear on, gonna be heading to Beverley Town v Parkgate in half hour or so. I'm feeling fairly confident after we were battered 7-0 at Hallam last weekend.

Captain James Piercy is set to play his 100th game for the Beavers, his world class header quite often winning a game for us.

C'mon Beavers! Dave Riccardo, Dave Riccardo, we are Riccardo's Army!!

And the Beavers bounce back from the 7-0 thrashing last week to give 334 fans a dominant performance to watch which saw them run out 4-1 winners against Parkgate! Beavers! Beavers! 🦫 🦫

I think it's now fair to say that Man City's five-peat is not going to happen.

No but the Sky pitch-side advertising for Wigan v Warrington in Vegas was impressive.
