Book thread: what are you reading?

The Left Unity Manifesto.

Try supplementing it with Harry's Last Stand by Harry Leslie Smith to see where your right wing forelock tugging obsequiousness is taking us back to. You might learn something. I doubt it but I'm an eternal optimist.

I've already seen that one. In fact, I've also finished colouring it in.

Finally gotten around to reading this – certainly as good as the first one, in fact I think I’ve laughed more at this one – the yarn early in the book about the family tortoise had me properly chortling. Just read the section on Gazza and I’m not sure what to think really – it was quite touching in a way although the implication that he was quick to embrace the story of his tragic downfall, when he was weary to accept his meteoric rise is rather sad, but telling in its own way.

Anyway, great book as expected, will be sad when it’s over.

The BBC are currently recording a series based on the first book, due to be broadcast later this year. Peter Kay is playing Danny's dad, so it'll be interesting to hear his take on the Sarf Lahndan accent.

A semi-contemporary of his was fellow music journo Mark Ellen, and his book 'Rock Stars stole my Life!' is also very funny and revealing.

No information yet on Danny's next volume, probably because the TV series is taking up a lot of his time. Titles he has suggested in the past are either A Pith Helmet full of Saveloys or Fifty Years a Chinaman... so it won't be called either of those.

Harry has more integrity in his little finger than you could muster if you were able to infinitely clone yourself.

To be fair, I've just read some notes on him, and I'm in no position to denigrate him.

I do like Peter Kay, but I'm wondering if he can do Spud justice. Hopefully so, as it could well be a great series.

According to Amazon Vol 3 is out end of next year and carrying on the "Going..." titles, "Going Round The Bend" - though I do quite like the others suggested, even though they'll never see the light of day!

Peter Kay (Spud), the real Danny Baker and Laurie Kynaston, who plays Danny in the series.

I read about this in the MEN at work as they are filming it round Salford/Eccles. I got the impression (wrongly obviously) that he was doing it in a northern style. ..which I found odd. But then it was a long night shift.

I think they are shooting there for the architecture, as Danny's childhood area of London has changed a bit too much to get the period feel. Just like 'Peaky Blinders' was a story about Birmingham, but had a lot of external scenes filmed in Bradford.

I'm on the wrong thread! I should be on the "What are you listening to"

Because I'm listening to Bernard Cornwells " The Pagan Lord". I listen whilst Im driving and as at some point over the weekend I'm likely to finish it whilst I'm on the M6 ( Barrow v Swinton Saturday andOldham v Coventry on Sunday) I have already down loaded the last one in the same series "The empty throne" via Audible.

The Hydrogen Sonata by Iain M Banks one of the novels in his "culture" series, not an easy read but rewarding.

His last SF book. Not his best, but interesting as always.

Good books, I do enjoy Bernard Cornwell's work.

I've read most of the Sharpe books, not keen on the Vikings ones, really miss the Starbuck US Civil War stories, I thought they were excellent.
