Book thread: what are you reading?

Recommended Posts

At the moment I am reading an ESTA form.  It's good stuff.

Have you ever been or are you now involved in espionage or sabotage; or in terrorist activities; or genocide; or between 1933 and 1945 were you involved, in any way, in persecutions associated with Nazi Germany or its allies?

Excellent. Genuinely can't wait - the first volume was one of the best celeb autobiogs I've ever read. Was a bit sad to see this book get delayed just before release last year. Hope there are more volumes to come - you get the impression he could easily release ten books and not run out of stories. I heard he opens this new book with the fact he forgot to put an incident when he was shot when he was younger in the first book!

Also heard rumours the first volume is being adapted for tv - not too sure about that. Could go either way, although there are enough ripping yarns in there to be fair.

'Going off alarming' arrived on my Kindle this morning. :)

Excellent. Although I do have a Kindle, I imagine jolly old Saint Nick may be bringing it to me, so I'll have to wait a tad longer.

Plenty to read in the meantime, currently on Tales from The Secret Footballer. Just an absolute other world in both good ways but plenty of bad ways. I would reccomend it, although he does come across as aroggant at times despite pointing out he isn't about three times a chapter. If you can get over that, it's a real insight.

If any family ask what I want for Christmas, I'll put the paper edition on the list. As it is, I'm tearing through the book at an alarming rate.

99p for Booker long-listed The Wake on the Kindle right now.  Started last night.  Written in a 'shadow tongue' mix of Old English and modern, tells the story of the last of the resistance fighters to Norman rule.  Apparently.  It's either going to be brilliant or I shall be punching the screen on the Kindle.

I can't imagine that you've the strength to do it any damage, so go for it.

Had the pleasure of attending 'An Audience with Dennis Skinner' at Hull KR's KC Lightstream Stadium last Friday night, hosted by the babyfaced lefty journo Owen Jones, one of series of events to promote Skinner's new book 'Sailing Close to the Wind'.
Jones also has a new book out, 'The Establishment - And How They Get Away With It'.
I bought copies of both on the night which the two gents were kind enough to sign as well, so that's my reading list for the moment.

It was very entertaining.

I thought it might be cancelled as it was on the day that Parliament was recalled to debate the bombing of IS, and Skinner is renowned for never missing a vote. Sure enough, he was in Parliament (had been there since 8am, apparently), spoke in the debate and voted (against) but still managed to make it to Hull by 9.30pm, slightly later than advertised, and was still there chatting to people and signing books at nearly midnight.

He did about an hour's Q & A with Owen Jones, talking about his life inside and outside politics, then took questions from the audience for about half an hour, then just sat on the step at the side of the stage informally chatting to people and signing books for anyone who asked. He was still there when I left at 11.45pm and appeared to be in no hurry to leave while there were still people wanting to talk to him. Jones was stood at the side of him doing the same and both came across really well.

You don't have to agree with all they say to wish there were more like them in the frontline of leftward leaning politics; intelligent, articulate, passionate and perhaps most of all, inspiring.

'When you lunch with the Emperor' by Ludwig Bemelmans. Autobiographical bits and pieces from the author and illustrator of the 'Madeleine' books (also a screenwriter and hotelier at times). Fun, charming, but occasionally chaotic.

Graham Lord's biography of Jeffrey Bernard. Even more dissolute and self-destructive than you might have guessed.

So far, in this chapter, he's been having it off with the young Wendy Richard ("not as cockney as she liked to make out"), been on a blind date with Lauren Bacall ("intimidating and snooty") and punched Suggs' mother in the mouth, an act that shocked him so much he actually went on the wagon. Well, for a while.

Okay, now he's on a six-hour vodka and champagne binge with Olga Korbut.

Currently reading 'Denial' by Peter James. Not for the first time, I've found a modern novel that is very hard to 'get into'.

I think the modern style of multi threading a novel is to blame. The authors are so busy cutting between story lines, that none of them develop quickly enough to hook me into the overall story. When the story lines do begin to come together, I start to enjoy the novel.

I've just got past page 300 of 500 and I'm enjoying it. The first 200 pages or so were a hard slog, though.
