Our sweet little five month old kitten killed a water vole tonight. Either that or it was a very chubby rat with a smaller tail :(

I think most people’s brain switches off when they drive into a supermarket car park. It doesn’t seem to switch back on until they leave.

I could rant about the domestic cat for a very long time.

From the British Wildlife Centre's website :

"'Ratty' in The Wind in the Willows was not a rat at all, but a water vole. Sadly he is now the most endangered mammal species in the UK."

Let's hope it was either a Bank Vole or a Field Vole :

Our cat’s a killing machine, there’s usually a dead or half dead critter of some species on the kitchen floor in the morning

I'm not a wildlife expert at all and can't tell which this is:

Ratty.jpg

We've got three cats, the other two male cats just don't bring in anything.  We go long periods without seeing anything bar the very rare mouse around once a year.  Our older male cat once caught a frog and was walking around the house with a pitiful meow with the thing live in his mouth and unharmed, he was more than disgusted with it and didn't know what to do, since then he's not brought anything in.

I think it's a female cat thing, we used to have an old girl who died a couple of years ago and she was a really sweet cat to us but vicious to anything with four legs (she didn't like spiders).  Our new kitten murdered a harvest spider within days of being in the house, happily munching away on it with extra whiskers in the form of its legs.  I think she'll be the trouble maker as that vole was significantly beyond the size I thought she could carry, but she did.

And this thread is right for it given the choice words I used for the kitten last night.

Doesn't look like "Arvicola Amphibius" to me...

Image result for field vole

Which means it's either the bank vole or field vole and they're not as endangered as the water vole, although it may well come to that if your ba$tard murdering moggie continues it's killing spree.

Our male cat is a prolific hunter, despite only having one eye (hence no sence of depth) and not many teeth. A bell on his collar makes no difference. Mice, voles, rabbits, young pheasants, various other garden birds have all been brought home in the past, and most are consumed on the doorstep, sometimes at the rate of 2 or 3 a day through the summer, though far less in winter. He's that quick at catching things, he can sometimes have something caught and back home in under 30 seconds of leaving the house.

The new Firefox version that installed itself today.  It... it... it's UGLY.  And blocky.  And ugly.  Did I mention ugly?  It's Windows 10 ugly.  It's OAP trying to be "cool" ugly.

And it disabled by protection and anti-spam add-ons without telling me.  I got a window full of adverts when I went to the Torygraph website.

15 third party website javascript options called by the Torygraph website alone, way more than half of them trackers and advertising scripts trying to do things I really don't want.

Is that a mutation thing down your way or proof that you are definitely not a wilflife expert??

Downgraded to Firefox 56 until noScript gets upgraded to cope with it

As a very 'cool' oap, I object in the strongest possible way to this stereotypical labelling of us geriatrics.

Pub lunch with a good friend today.  The pub had its Christmas decorations up.  Oh come on... it's sodding November.  The flashing lights all across the pub wood beamed ceiling was just annoying.

Its not the size of the card... Its the size of the card reader.  Meaning you can cram a bit more heat sink or battery in the phone.

Also, most of them don't go in phones - over 6 billion SIMs made this year. Will probably stop being a physical  thing before too long, anyway (e.g. latest Apple watch doesn't have a separate SIM.)

Driving home last night having just picked by wife up, we passed a dog on a narrow lane, no sign of any owner. Stopped and caught it, collar but no ID. Knocked at the nearest house, not theirs and didn't know whose it was. Call council, they can't help as no dog warden service out of hours, try RSPCA. Call RSPCA, they don't deal with strays, call the council. Tried the police, they can't help, call the RSPCA. Called local on call vet who said bring it in to be scanned for a microchip. It was chipped, but the registered owner lives 10 miles away and claimed to have not seen it in 7 years since it ran off. Not interested in having it back. Vets won't keep it overnight, try RSPCA. Given we have a dog of our own, and no way to keep them apart, we can't really take it home. At 11pm, after 3 hours of trying to sort it out, we managed to persuade my in-laws to let it stay in their porch overnight, and my wife is going to work late so the council can be contacted in hours.

I accept dogs can get out, but what a farce, all because the owner can't be bothered with any ID for their pet. ???

The RSPCA are a waste of space, they line to come across as the best thing to happen to animals ever, but they are very lazy.

It's the owners lack of care in not tagging and ensuring chip details are up to date I have the biggest gripe with tbh.

There are too many dogs about in relation to the number of people prepared to look after them properly and those capable of doing so.
