Yup. It's a key reason why I'm barely following Yorkshire any more.

EDIT

To clarify: things like this.

And to further clarify: things like this being repeated at other counties and franchises, with the silence or approval of the people who run and influence the game, is a key reason why I've done nothing to arrest my younger son's moving away from cricket.

The  💯 is not about trying to be second to the IPL it's selling the game off to the IPL ...

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/aug/16/ipl-owners-able-rename-hundred-teams-minority-stake-cricket-london-spirit

Look at South Africa to see how this works, with the whole SA20 set up run by the IPL owners with players increasingly contracted to world wide IPL franchises, and played without current Indian players (and possibly Pakistan players depending upon the politcal climate between the two countries) Eveything in SA cricket now revolves around the paymasters of the SA20 and it will be the same here.

Anyone seriously think you can withdraw contracted England players from a 💯 franchise that has an IPL owner. Assuming of course those players do not enter into year round Franchise contracts.

That's good. Australia and England don't play each other nearly enough.

Hard to celebrate the Ashes without those two teams.

At least it's not at Lords.

Cricket is back just in time for the last 5 1/2 weeks of the season with the last international being played on a chilly September 29th after the domestic season has finished..

More spin off the field than on it this season, One top spinner is that England outclassed a poor West Indies side, conveniently forgetting that the series result could have been 2-1 West Indies if :

  • West indies had pressed home the advantage after getting a first innings lead of 41 at Trent Bridge and having England one down while still in minus territory
  • West Indies had pressed home the advantage when England were 52-5 at Edgbaston, over 200 behind
  • If Kemar Roach had been available for the West Indies. An experienced fast bowler might have made a difference.

England still bat for only 90 odd overs in an innings (92.2 Overs 2nd Innings at Trent Bridge being the top effort) and in Dan Lawrence who opens for Surrey in the T20 make exactly the same mistake as they did with Alex Hales and Jason Roy as openers.

The bowling was England big plus out of that series, the Idea is to build a group of five fast(ish) bowlers in order to rotate during back to back tests. Now England could afford to play Atkinson for he three tests simply because the games finished early. Ditto Wood in the last two. If these games had dragged on you would haveseen Dillon Pennington but will not now as he got injured playing the 💯.😡

Shoaib Bashir is learning on the job in Test Cricket rather than County Cricket, A bit like Daniel Vettori learned his trade for New Zealand in the late 1990's. He has real potentail butr needs to work on his batting to at least hold an end otherwise

Sri Lanka will give England a sterner test and the side will rely more than ever on Joe Root with a rookie captain and vice captain not just for experience and tactical nous but also runs as this was the other big plus for England Joe Root batting like... Joe Root and not the bloke dancing down the wicket launching a wahoo at Nathan Lyon.

Interesting times post series coing up with the T20 series starting the day after the scheduled end of the Third Test against Sri Lanka. Now England want to play Jamie Smith and Harry Brook so do they

  • Drop them from the Test side to play in the T20 against Australia
  • Keep them in the test side and give them a break until the ODI's against Australia
  • Try to makev them play both

Next years fixtures are due out in the next 24/48 Hours and the India 5 Test Series condensed into about 7 weeks with ODI series against West Indies, Pre India a T20 post India v West Indies and South Africa and a ODI series against South Afrioca and a three mntch series in Ireland which is good because originally this was to have clashed with one of the India Tests with two separate England sides playing at the same time.

SKY Currently do not have the rights for Irish Cricket so either fans wioll be going to Malahide live, or SKY will cut a deal with Cricket Ireland bringing in much needed cash - So at last a bouquet for the ECB to go with the pile of bricks they have deservedly picked up.

Nice big gap in late July / August for the likes of MI London to play Southern Capitals in 💯 which may well become a T20 league, because contrary to more spin. if the owners ECB go to SKY and offer an all singing and dancing version of the SA20, currently the second best league in the world SKY will change their tune on this and a terrestrial broadcaster will pick up the comp from the outdated BBC. No current Indian players of course but this new league will be "Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi" .

The deal between Cricket Australia and the ECB is reciprocal and the 150 years of Test cricket in England game is to be played in August 2030. It should be being played at the Oval, but last time it was played at Lords in 1980. This time round with ground improvements there is more chance that the Oval will be the venue but it might boil down to what would be considdred the bigger revue earner.

England need a laead of 150-200 from the first innings because that pitch may well break up to favourt Sri Lanka's spinners

Some points

  • A lot has been made of Sri Lanka being undercooked but in the game they lost against the Engl;and Lions there was a significantly better second innings performance batting. It's abetter batting line up than people are giving them credit for.
  • Someone on Twitter wrote that "England has a longer tail than a giraffe". Not so Atkinson can bat, Pots has already got 149 this year and Mark Wood can contribute a 20-30 only Bashir needs to improve his batting. If you are an England bowler you need to up your contribution with the bat as a point of difference as to why you should be included in the side, for next summer with the first choice XI being Wood, Archer, Stokes and Bashir there is only the one spot up for grabs.
  • As for the crowd there are a few reasons for the lowish turnout
  1. Game starts on a Wednesday
  2. Ticket Prices
  3. It is Chll-I in Manchester to be sitting for 7 hours at a ground
  4. Sri Lanka have never been the greatest draw in copmparison to other countries

Surprisingly this important piece of research has come out in the internet but not print edition of The Daily Telegraph

https://x.com/OutsideCricket/status/1826184541830025555

Now whilst confirming what many of us knew, considering the Telegraph has been accoused of Client journalism when itr comes to the 💯. Perhaps this is a way of preparing the Cricket public for a sale far short of the ECB stated figure.😉

Lancashire also seem to be edging towards a controlling interest in the club ("partnership") sold to an IPL Backer Lancashire seek IPL partner. As there is an active members group up there, he Lancs AGM should be fun...

Pakistan tour also unlikely to be televised - Some would say the price any sport pays for signing up to a pay per view provider Pakistan Tour not to be televised

How does that work then?

Not sure. I can find out, but meh.

We'll still likely try and get tickets around the 5 tests, but probably not Headingley now as we're just being taken advantage of.

If we don't get tickets, then also meh. Sod em, days out can be found elsewhere.

Thursday

Lancashire v Hampshire. I doubt we can catch Surrey, but a win will keep Hampshire in with a chance of getting 2nd place. Is it 1 team that gets relegated? Bottom placed Kent are 34pts behind second to bottom Lancashire.

England v Sri Lanka. Olly Stone is back to replace the injured Mark Wood. Hope the weather is kind.

Looking at the forecast, both teams should aim to get their desired result in four days, as Monday looks wet all day.

Never been to a four day county match before.  Went to he second day (Friday) of Yorkshire v Sussex at Scarborough.  The weather was good, play was uninterrupted, Scarborough cricket ground it a nice ground, with good bars and excellent food facilities, and great views the play was attractive, all in all an excellent day.  I'll probably give county cricket another go.
