Just put £50 on Tonga got 5-2 seen as though your all saying England will win, as RL fans are known to be wrong more than right 🤣🤣

After sticking a ton on Tonga to win the WC at 14s and smugly thinking about how to spend my cash, I won’t be backing them in the Northern Hemisphere again.

Wow, has there ever been a younger England captain?

Good question. 22 is young for a captain, in any sport.

What other candidates were there, and why might they have been overlooked in favour of Welsby?

Is it likely to be a permanent appointment, or just filling in for a game or so?

Maybe Shaun Wane is aware of the following:

On 29 May 1963, 22-year-old Bobby Moore captained his country for the first time in just his 12th appearance after the retirement of Johnny Haynes and an injury to his successor, Jimmy Armfield. He was the youngest man ever to captain England at the highest level.

That turned out all right.

Showing my age here, but I’m fairly sure Barry Venison was 19 or 20 when he captained Sunderland in the 1985 Milk Cup final, won of course by Norwich, 1-0 with an Asa Hartford shot deflected in off Gordon Chisholm. The last ever 100,000 crowd in England.

Barry Venison! Now that's a name I never expected to read on this forum. Great hair, and great knowledge by you, Eddie. I did watch the 1985 FA Cup Final, but the earliest Milk Cup final I remember was Oxford the following year, so I missed that epic Norwich win.

Unfortunately for you they got their revenge in the 1992 FA Cup SF!

No Young is a big call.

Suppose those missing the 17 will depend on the bench composition, assuming Walker plays it's probably 2 of Lees, Farrell and Mulhearn to miss out?

So, the spine is Welsby, Lewis, Smith and Clark / Walker (one of the latter on the bench)

Will Wane play Lewis at full back and Welsby at 6 or the other way around?

Has to be Makinson, Newman, King and Johnstone in the backline.

We will probably see Bateman and Whitehead in the 2nd row and McMeeken on the bench.

From that, I would go with.

1. Welsby/Lewis

2. Makinson

3. Newman

4. King

5. Johnstone

6. Welsby/Lewis

7. Smith

8. Hill

9. Clark

10. Burgess

11. Bateman

12. Whitehead

13. Radley

14. Lees

15. Mulhern

16. Walker

17. McMeeken

This is Farrell and Knowles to miss out - but it could easily be Farrell in place of Whitehead or Bateman.

I would like to see two specialist props on the bench and I like McMeeken over Knowles as he is cover for front row and the edge in case we have to shift an edge player into the centre following injury.

It was Makinson or Young so either way a quality player.

I am pleased that Johnstone has one wing berth and I am also pleased that the wingers are playing on their preferred wing (I assume!).

Yeah I suppose this is one of those fortunate situations where there is no wrong choice, be nice if one could play centre but I warrant putting Dom there without extended first-grade experience in the position.

Dom has got plenty of time. I think giving Tom a slot is great reward for his determination to come back from at least two serious knee injuries. He did right to move on from Wakefield which IMHO can only assist to enhance his international opportunities. Like I say Dom will also get his shot.

Very excited for this

My kids are looking forward to the Sipi Tau

England just too strong/settled to English conditions for the first game and we win by 3 scores I think

Hoping some chanting gets going.....are they brining in the England football band again? Mich as I didn't like the Sheffield game it was at least nice and shouty/cheery

They were awful at Doncaster and have been awful at Sheffield Wednesday/Leeds/England whoever pays them enough for years.

The Tonga fans were brilliant in the world cup.
