So why haven't they stopped other sports from using it? Legal costs presumably?

Because that's not how it works.

It's also is trademarked and you couldn't stop someone calling their different sport's league Super League anyway.

Does it have to be preceded by the name of the sport? E.g. Football Super League? I'm assuming things like the NFL, NBA etc are trademarked - are there different laws in the US? Sorry for all the questions - you seem to know a lot more than me!

I really don't but we've done it before on here (probably years ago now) so I'm vaguely remembering what the conclusions were.

There are other National Football Leagues around the world. There's one in Ireland, I believe. What there aren't are any that use the logos without permission and play American Football.

You couldn't set up another Super League playing rugby league (and nor could you use Super League logos without permission) but setting up a Super League doing anything else is, I think, fine.

Thanks. So in that sense, we probably could have done with future-proofing the brand by putting 'rugby' somewhere in it. I seem to remember it was tagged in there for a couple of seasons but it soon reverted to just 'Super League'.

Haven’t Easy Jet just tried (and succeeded?) to get a Band ‘Easy life’ to change their name?

Apros pro of nothing, I had a name situation like this in my business and I paid a specialist lawyer to find out who had the most valid use of the name, turns out I did but really couldn’t be arsed with the hassle or the costs to challenge so change my trading name slightly, they even offered a (stupidly small) amount for me to change my legal name but it had loads if caveats so i told them to do one.

Quite possibly - but sometimes the threat has nothing behind it. Plenty of business called McDonald's have successfully told the golden arches lot to go away.

It is when there is the possibility of confusion or when you are in very similar businesses/areas (and football and rugby league would not count there I don't think) that it becomes an issue. (A local restaurant here has had to change its name because it is the same as another in a nearby town and the latter argued people would believe it was a new branch of theirs - and yet there are hundreds of pubs called The Red Lion in the UK)

My point was that sometimes if you threaten it it can have the desired outcome however in this instance the FA (or whoever) would probably have just laughed it off.

The thing is now thst the women’s game (rl) is gaining popularity having a Women’s Super League in football means i think we should look at rebranding

I don't know if the thread on here is still findable but even when it launched a decade or more ago I said that the FA's Super League could cause us problems long term.

Not sure how we really get passed that given how we have gone out of our way to name it Super League rather than rugby league so often.

We get passed it by rebranding, we have a perfect opportunity especially as IMG have a very good in house Branding Agency, I also remember it being part of the plan

easyJet have loads of money and the band has very little, I don't think it helped that the band used orange planes in their posters...

I don’t mind that

Elite RL or Europe RL? Either way it would have to be marketed as ERL like NRL, I don’t know wether its a thing but Im sure premier league seem to have started to push EPL a bit more, coukd just be my perception though as I don’t follow football

ERL sounds good to me

I bet they would have tried if it was the other way round

If that was the case they would’ve done it when we named the womens game super league. Which I’m sure was after football had the WSL.
