Oh look:

The NRL needs Vegas to make financial sense quickly. That means selling all 65,000 seats and an uptick in viewing figures to outweigh the travel costs, stadium hire and hassle. With TV deals already in place to cover every game, these events need to be added to the calendar or severely souped up to make money.

Also - don't think I've seen it put on here - Matthew Shaw reporting there will be no WCC next year.

According to today's Times, the rugby union British Lions are considering talking a game to Las Vegas in 2029. No link - paywall.

Gridiron fans might prefer Union to League as there are so many breaks in play and too many players.

If that is indeed the case that is really sad to hear.

Yeah, sounds like the WCC is dead. I saw the Penrith CEO on the James Graham podcast and he just had no interest in making it happen, giving every excuse under the sun. When he said 'the schedule just doesn't work' James Graham presumed he meant for Wigan and seemed shocked when the guy said it was Penrith who couldn't fit it in.

The suggestion of having, from 2026, the WCC within the NRL Magic Weekend could be good. It'd give the Australian audience a tast of how the SL can be good.

That seems the gist of it. Since winning the NRL Grand Final Penrith have had just no interest in playing in the WCC.

The point being that in the UK. It will be welcomed with open arms by fans and tame media and presented as an exciting, pioneering nnove for rugby.

All on mandatory rest periods he said (along with numerous other excuses) when Graham asked why they couldn't play it before Vegas. A lot of Penrith players are already on holiday and the rest finish this Saturday, so they would have approximately 16 weeks then before Vegas. It's a physical sport and it's impossible to go down the football/cricket route of players getting hardly any time off but if they cannot fit in a WCC between this Saturday and March 1st, they simply don't want to play the fixture enough.

Getting beat twice in a row may have put them off.

Agreed, their forums won’t be full of fans moaning about it, as well as everything else. Not that I can claim never to do that myself of course!

They'd likely find the slower pace of Union another reason to prefer it too, it will make Union easier for them to follow.

They're sick of people saying that they're not world champions. This way they can unilaterally decide they are.

To be fair they are on 4 straight losses in the WCC.

I dont think NRL would want attention distracted from magic games and I dont think they would want to exclude the reigning champions from the magic schedule.

Magic already sells out so its unlikely there would be much do-reh-me to be made from it.

VEGAS AND JD SPORTS
Hot on the heels of a groundbreaking deal with Red Bull, the NRL has landed another significant sponsorship that strengthens their appeal to a younger audience by signing JD Sports to be their presenting partner for Las Vegas for the next two years.

The latest deal with a global brand is further evidence of the NRL’s growing appeal with the likes of Reece Walsh, Nathan Cleary and Kalyn Ponga helping rugby league capture a new market.
JD Sports is a global brand that is big in the US and UK and growing in Australia and New Zealand. This will be their first foray into footy sponsorship.

“It is great to welcome JD Sports to the rugby league community as a partner and as a brand that has a passion for innovation,” NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said.

“We look forward to working with JD Sports to take the Rugby League Las Vegas festival to even greater heights for fans over the next two years.

“The partnership represents an opportunity for the NRL to work with a global sports brand to build our connection to youth culture and capitalise on the brand’s influence in the US.”

By coincidence I walked past the JD Sports store in Parramatta mall today, huge store full of young people, just another market League is aiming for.

I've just got back from Las Vegas. I didn't see any advertising for the games beyond something on the Allegiant Stadium website. But then, the Formula 1 set up was tending to overshadow everything. I did get chatting to a local in a bar though, who was a Rugby Union fan and went last year and is going again next year.

I think the only realistic thing for the games is to A) make some money and possibly get a foothold within the collosal gambling industry. B) Let the players have an amazing experience playing at the home of the Vegas Raiders and C) Raise a little bit of awareness of the game, however small.

Forget the "Gridiron fans will love it" angle, they love NFL or college football - and obsessively so. This is not up for negotiation.

My advice to any fans is.... just go, it's an amazing place and watching RL should make it a fantastic trip. I'm even weighing up the possibility of going to the games next year.

Given your location, I’m not sure you’ll be quite aware of the irony of JD’s involvement 😊
