John Bateman to leave West Tigers

Recommended Posts

John Bateman plans to join Warrington with six weeks remaining in the NRL season.

The plan is to return to the Tigers to play out his remaining two years of his contract next year.

it has been suggested his form has not been great and the Tigers are looking to offload the $700,000 a season player permanently.

I've not seen too many recent Tigers games, what's his form been like?

Hasn't he been out injured for the last 2 months with some kind of shoulder/pec injury?

I used to watch some Tigers games earlier in the season, Bateman tried, he was far from the best on the pitch.

I felt like he was pretty similar to his previous stints in the NRL, (IMO) he gets outpowered a bit in the opening 20-30 minutes, and then for the last 20 minutes he outmuscles/out enthuses his opp'.

Didn't think his form was too bad, but he clearly is getting older.

I heard, a few months ago, that he'd picked up a big knock - I didn't realise that he was still injured.

It sounds like an interesting sequence - injured at Wests, go to Warrington, back to Wests next season...

I'm not sure anyone in the UK is going to be offering Bateman £350k per year!! Nor is any club in the NRL likely to match his Wests contract either for that matter.

Classic Wests Tigers recruitment.

It's hard to judge a player's form in a team that's at the bottom of the heap. He certainly tries but few in that side catch the eye.

It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

He got injured in Round 10 but has been back for the last 4 rounds.

In those 4 games, the Tigers have conceded an average of 45 points... no one is standing out in that type of performance (well, not in a good way).

he won't be going back down under after the stand up argument with BM in front of the rest of the team - baffled as to why he went to wests in the 1st place - agents and money the only reason I can think?

If only this was posted on the transfer thread yesterday

Most people don’t trawl through threads seeing if something they want to post has already been done.

sam burgess falling in to the "old great mates" trap already by signing him - a mistake so many coaches make too often

You don't need to though. Everyone knows there's a transfer thread and the Bateman story is literally the last few posts on it.

I generally don't check the transfer thread regularly

If the OP hadn't posted a specific article on this particular transfer I'd have missed people's comments around this

For big transfer news I think it's justified to have a separate thread

Why would Burgess and Bateman be "old great mates" ? Have they even played with each other outside of playing for England?

I think they 'grew up' rugby-wise playing together, along with Whitehead et al in the Bradford academy.   Doesn't fill me with confidence about this signing.   Didn't something similar happen at Wigan?   He seems like another Hardaker.

Can see a number of Super League clubs seeing how much Wests will be willing to subsidise his contract for a potential move next year. Suspect Leigh will make a move, as a replacement for O'Donnell, with an existing marquee contract seemingly about to be freed up. Not keen.

Experienced big game player, will be invaluable for Warrington in the final section of the season were squad depth, available players and big game experience will prevail.

In what way is he like Hardaker?

I have plenty of sympathy for Bateman in terms of him coming and going from the UK tbh. His situation is totally different to Hardaker in that he has one child in the UK and one in Oz and a partner from Australia. His partner was homesick when they were at Wigan and he went back with her, so it's obviously a fine balancing act as you sense he'd probably rather be over here. Hardaker on the other hand said Wigan was too far a drive from Cas but ended up at Leigh a few months later. That 2 mile difference must've been the deal breaker!

Strange situation if he’s planned to go back . Hes not been anything like his old form but then he’s at a basket case of a set up . I don’t know why they’d release him to want him back and tbh i don’t know why he’d want to go back

More like he thinks he is someone who will add to the squad in the rest of the season.
