Used to live in Appley Bridge. It feels like that pub gets a new owner and a 'refurb' every few years. Could easily be a really nice country pub/restaurant if they focused on food, but it was always poor even for pub grub. And if you're only going for the drink the two other pubs nearby are better. Maybe the new owner can help it fulfil its potential.

It's a pub that has never made it's mind up. At one time it used to have a good restaurant quality menu, problem was the bar area full of dickheads effin and blindin, then went more basic on the food (stopped doing their lovely breakfast at weekend). Then tried to become a 'boozer'.

Hope it works out, it is in a cracking location.

Towards the end of Skolars' time in the professional ranks, I discovered that the Bohem Brewery Tap was within walking distance of the New River Stadium. I managed to visit it again on Saturday as my football team were playing at Coles Park, the home of Haringey Borough, which is just along the road from Skolars. The tap is on Myddleton Road, a very pleasant High Street of independent shops and cafes, primarily providing for the local Greek Cypriot population. At one end of the road is Bowes Park railway station and Bounds Green underground station on the Piccadilly line so it is easily accessible from central London. The tap isn't big, although there are further tables in a covered section on the pavement.

Bohem Brewery is Czech owned and they produce beers in the national style. Amos, their pilsner, is always on and on Saturday there was also Martina, a table style beer, and Vanda, a dark lager with vanilla elements. All were very fresh and I am a real fan, Definitely worth a visit.

Another tap has just opened in Myddleton Road, this being for the Muswell Hillbillies Brewery, which we also visited. It is less rough and ready than Bohem and rather bigger as it stretches out the back and has a garden.  I was not sure that we were hip enough for it.  It was busy and a lot of people seemed to be there for the food, which looked good but pricey. There was no real ale, but we tried their IPA and pale ale off tap. Both were pretty good if a tad cold. They also had various craft beers on, but we preferred the look of the session beers. I don't think I would go out of my way for it, but it tied in nicely with a trip to Bohem.

Near Russel Square in London ther is/was a pub that had Original Budwieser Budvar on draught, both braun and blonde, my wife is a big fan of Budvar and was wondering which to go for. The guy behind the bar said to her "you're from up north, you like mixed, I'll do you a mixed", she whent for it. She now recomends Budvar mixed to everyone.

Got a bottle of each to give Budvar "mixed" a go. It's really rather good.

Update:

Found out it is going to be a dreaded Green King pub, so won't be visiting anytime soon if ever.

The Raven on Wallgate Wigan has been sold by owner Tony Callaghan.

No idea who to yet, but has become in dire need of a spruce up of late. Callaghan has said it will change hands on 1st November and close for some work to be done, I presume it will be a breif closure as the new owners will want to be open for the Christmas period.

Stout Wars in Kendal this weekend.

A number of pubs get some stouts, porters and other dark beers in. I like a dark beer/stout in the winter.

Currently in a pub where they are serving a 15% imperial stout......in halves of course.

Only realised it was on this weekend, this morning. Finishes tomorrow

Thanks for the info we normally have our Christmas do round Wigan, and the Raven is after the central and the swan, so it’s probably straight to the chop house then.

Still no news on who has taken over and when it will re-open, may still be on your list if it opens soon enough and doesn't change too much.

I spent an hour or two this evening in The Royal Oak in Swallowcliffe

50% owned by James May, very quiet, nice beer (Kiwi IPA) and a great chef.

I am fortunate that if I leave my building, turn right and walk for a minute, I get to The Duke of Sussex.

And if I leave my building, turn left and walk for a minute, I get to The Swan.

Unfortunately as they are both in London, they are #£%@holes of course.

I'm a regular visitor to both of those establishments. My daughter lives just round the corner. Must have walked  past your building dozens of times.

We ventured a bit further afield last week to The Lamb on the High Road.

Small world.

My place is right in the middle of the two - Chiswick Green Studios... behind the gate.

There are a few other very nice pubs around - which I am sure your daughter knows, but if you want any recommendations let me know.

Not only I have walked past your building, I've been in it several times. My daughter's father-in-law lives there (no he's not Adrian Chiles), small world indeed.

Would be only too happy for you to pass on any recommendations. There might be one or two we've missed. I do like The Swan and The Duke though, particularly their excellent beer gardens.

Seems it (The Raven) is now in the hands of a small pub co. Valiant. Work has started on the revamp, original features, tiled floor etc. being kept and keeping real ale as an offering.

Callahan is finally about to reopen The Cross Keys in nearby Aston-in-Makerfield following a major refit.

Former owner Tony Callahan has announced following the sale of the Raven and his opening of the Cross Keys he is giving Harry's Bar on Wallgate Wigan a big makeover and returning it to a traditional pub under its original name of The Clarence Hotel.

British microbreweries are possibly thriving because they aren't big enough for the vulture capitalists and megacorps to bother buying them up, squeezing them dry and discarding the remains.
