I suppose League/Touch/Oztag, Touch Football and obviously Rugby League are all Rugby League. No doubt there is some is some double counting going on amongst them but impressive all the same.

I was thinking the same thing, about multiple categories being RL.

However I'm not sure whether what they label 'Touch Football' is Australian Rules Touch.

Yes looking again I think you're right because the other category plainly has Touch too and looks to be all the non contact forms of RL combined. My error, good spot.

No, it's a confusing chart but League/Touch/Oztag is actually a combination of the other 3 seperate bars to the right (rugby league; touch football; oztag). No idea why they'd do that, or at least do it and not make it clear that one bar in the chart was a compilation bar, but you can see the numbers add up.

So 470,000 is the total number for all formats of rugby league.

Good spot again! What a weird way to do it though.

I always find this odd. I never played basketball outside of school, and have never heard of anyone i know playing basketball at adult or youth level.

I have heard of and/or know people who play most other sports, but basketball always does well in these studies.

As you say it mainly seems to be played in schools and few seem to play outside school. That's certainly been the way it's been for my kids. It's probably quite a school friendly sport too, doesn't involve contact or heaps of specialist coaching really and can be played inside and takes up little room. Obviously Basketball England seem to do a lot in schools too.

It's massive in schools so that gives it a boost but, for example, despite it being essentially invisible in the area there are three basketball teams within ten miles of my front door. That puts it behind only football and cricket. Go to places without cricket - like a lot of urban areas now are - and you can easily see how it gets to the 'second team sport behind football'.

Yeah I did a quick search online and there are clubs in the local area here.

I find it weird to not know anyone who plays it (and mentions it!).

The reason for the OzTag/Touch/etc confusion:  the results come from an online survey where people filled in the name of the sport. They weren't ticking existing activities. My guess is that people gave it whatever name they use locally raher than any formal definition.

There's over 10 Aussies in the NBA at the moment, and the Australian league is one of the global "farm" leagues for up-and-coming NBA players (or didn't-quite-make-it former NBA players)

The big teams get 10,000 attendances, it's probably up there alongside football (soccer) as the #1 challenger sport to the big 3 of AFL, NRL and cricket, but moving up whereas the A-League seems to be on a downward spiral

I'm not surprised about basketball. I used to live in a mainly Filipino area and they all played basketball as their only sport. Also in Blacktown, Africans seem to play basketball, mainly Somalis and Sudanese. Here are some pictures from the Blacktown Storm senior team. The seem to be at least 50% Africans.

The comparable RL team is probably mainly Polynesians and the cricket team is probably Indians. Here's one of the Blacktown Workers junior cricket teams:

I think the popular sports depend partly on where you live.

Nor me, I literally don’t know anyone with any interest in basketball. You do see the odd NBA garment about but I assume that’s for fashion rather than being into watching it.

The account also has a chart for Queensland specifically.

Just an FYI.

My only surprise would be if people were surprised by this

Even in their little corner of Australia where it's played it will continue to decline in participation.....

It's a dangerous sport in terms of the body and brain both short and long term.....I chose for my kids to play netball and soccer despite an active union club they could have joined - for the same reason I'm would not let take up horse riding

Our sport is on the wrong side of history unfortunately

Impressive? Are you being serious?

I suspect this graph would look different in each state. My nephew and nieces have grown up in the suburbs of Melbourne and none of them have any interest in RL whatsoever, the lad is into Aussie Rules, Cricket and has a passing interest in Soccer and the girls are into Tennis and Swimming. Certainly in their part of Victoria the AFL is by far the dominant sport.

I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally
