Well, there's a thing; they just offered me the job! And are going to be paying me more* than I've ever earned before.

It has been a long and tedious time on the employment scrap-heap, and I'm glad it is almost over. The job doesn't start 'til next month, so I'll carry on my charity work for the next three weeks.

But tonight, I will be drinking with both hands!

*not a fortune, but several thousand above the salary bracket where I've mostly been applying.

Congratulations, enjoy the drinks!

Congratulations to those who have recently gained employment; it's tough and demoralising at times, I know. For those still looking keep at it, your qualities will be recognised.

Personally I've not enjoyed gainful employment in my desk bound field for over a year now. However, I count myself fortunate that I have other skills and the necessary funds to fall back on with my property renovation business.

I'd just like to say a word for the staff at my local job centre. I was very nervous when I first went to sign on for Universal Credit, but everyone has been very helpful, friendly and encouraging, while still being strict about the levels of job-related activity I was expected to do.

My mum saw the movie 'I, Daniel Blake' when I was job-hunting, and got very anxious about how I was going to be treated. However, all the people I have had dealings with at the Hendon Job Centre have been fine with me, and usually have fresh advice and suggestions every time I've gone for my regular meetings. They certainly did a huge job on making my CV and cover letter look far more acceptable, as my last job hunt was before the internet existed and I really hadn't a clue how to present things.

I trust you didn’t make any reference to your time at mobyclaw where if I recall correctly you spent your time plagiarising the market leading innovators at ClawPhin, plunging both companies into a trade war that ultimately destroyed them, leading to chief scientist Bob8 running off to Stark industries with the sellotape, CEO Clive Woody was last seen being comforted by Gwynneth Paltrow and I (ahem)have no idea what became of the Angelina Jolie clones. You wouldn’t come out of that looking good.

I had to tell them the truth, or I'd not just still be unemployed, but blacklisted by all honest cetacean-crustacean-delectation-specialisation companies. Saying I'd had any dealings with the ClawPhin rabble would have scuppered all chances of a job at any reputable company.

Last day in my present role today after 14.5 years.

Opportunity to work for another company in the same field presented itself and it just felt like the right time and being in my mid-40s other such possibilities will not be so easy to find in the future.

Excited but apprehensive in equal doses.

Looking back to the posts where I wasn't sure about this new role I'm in, I'm quite happy you lot (and others) convinced me to suck it up and jump in with both feet.  Today, they named me Chief Operating Officer :) Albeit still on an interim basis, as they can't guarantee funding beyond April 2020. Still, a year and a half of stability it looks like.

I always wanted to be a coo...

Just to keep you in touch with the job scene in the Bleep household.

I passed the Gate-line course & I started at Polegate and Eastbourne this week on lates, ie, finishing when the last train leaves. Now I hate spoiling anybody's party but the last train leaves after the last one to Hastings. So I left early. Tuesday, there was a drunk that had got on the line, so Southern started cancelling late trains. I left ultra-early (22.00) and got home early. Good job I did, turns out they ran no further trains from Eastbourne - Hastings, & it was over an hour before they arranged bus replacement service.

Supposed to be customer service at Brighton tomorrow.

my only brush with the law was when the last train decided to not stop at my little station and run through to the terminus where the Station manager declared that as the station was run by the other TOC to the line i was on there was nothing he could do and i should pay for a taxi when i refused to leave without some kind of arrangement - they called BTP to remove me from railway property forcibly (trespass on railway property is criminal not civil offence). When i rang the next day SWT denied it could have happened and said they would look at the logs and prove i was wrong paused for a bit then declared the logs were "missing".

Never even got an apology - as an aside it has not become regular that when the train is running late they ditch my stop to make up time

Tomorrow will mark the end of my first week in the new job, and it all seems to be going well so far. Nice air-conditioned offices, just off Grays Inn Road (south of Kings Cross station). Plenty of shops, cafés, pubs etc. nearby. And several local parks, where I can go to relax and read, if I want to spend my lunch hour out of the office.

And the job (thus far) is well within my abilities. Everyone I've met in the first week has been friendly, so the office psycho is clearly biding his/her time.

Maybe he’s just checking out the nearby shops, cafes, pubs etc.

If you can’t identify the office psycho then I have bad news for you ?

  • 1 month later...

September 27th, I went cycling with my daughter, through the woods near her's, I slid my bike & crashed against a tree stump.

I attended work on the 28th & 29th, and 1st October. I was in so much pain that I couldn't sneeze, even hiccuping was a jolt.

Today I got told by the company that because I took the 2nd as a sick day (despite a, so called 3 strike policy), I am no longer eligible for work with them.

I suppose I should move here from the rant thread!

Todays news was that the plans for our closure are more 'mature' than expected, so probably looking at a year max.  Its not great but I am fully aware that many have only weeks notice, so I have to look at the positives!

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I am sorry to hear that.

It is what it is.  No real job security these days so I think its something everyone should try and protect themselves for (savings, etc).

Today I have been offered a new contract role after being out of the game since May last year. The strange thing about it, and I've never come across this before, is that they have offered me the job completely sight unseen. No face to face interview, not even a telephone interview, just from my CV and the recommendation of the recruitment agency. Has anyone come across this before (not that I'm complaining)?
