Mrs Shadow and I went to see Mary Poppins Returns today.

I loved it, from the moment Emily Blunt appeared I was seven again. There were a couple of moments when the cleanliness of the Odeon Southampton was called into question as there must have been dust in the air and it got in my eye. The songs aren’t quite to the standard of the original but “Trip the light fantastic” has stuck in my head and the dance routine was almost a carbon copy of “Step in time”

lovely cameo from Karen Dotrice and Dick Van Dyke can still move at 93

Make it last folks, there will be no Film 2019

The Mark Kermode reviews are much better anyway - having a film show on fr about 10 weeks out of 52 is chuffin' useless.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

Mark Kermode has hated every film that doesn't include him, he is so negative-cynical about every film, I am surprised the major film makers have not banned him from their previews. He hates every film that has been released in the last 10 years, unless they give him a new house, car & Pig. Then only if the pig is pregnant, he is an idiot who sleeps through most of his reviews,

Do you actually watch them? This is one of the few films where I disagree with his assessment.

My only problem is that he gives too much away so I catch up afterwards.

Can’t fathom kermode out half the time . Talks like some emeritus professor of films just trying to sound as over clever and pompous as possible . No idea what he’s going on about . I like a film or I don’t , no need to dissect it to the nth degree . I started watching his documentary series and zoned out after about five minutes

The BBC should commission you - 8 film reviews in 3 mins. Great value for money!

Film nerds are essential for creating great cinema - whether that be arty films or blockbusters. Spielberg, Tarantino, etc.were all obsessed with films that they've seen and put bits into their films that are homages to films that most of the audience will never have seen.

Anyway, film review programs have never been popular. Even in its Barry Norman heyday Film 19whatever was always on at 11.20 on a Monday night.

They’d have to move the time slot I’d be in bed

Are we talking about the same person? He isn't in films, he has been hugely positive about movies that he likes on a weekly basis, including plenty from the last 10 years.

The house, car and pig thing suggests that you're just ranting now. The accusation that he sleeps through his reviews is unlikely to be backed up with any proof from you.

I'll put you on ignore for a bit, I think.

That would tell me whether you like it and give me very little indication as to whether I like it.

I can listen to Kermode and get a fair impression of whether I will like it.  I think he does make films often sound more intelligent than they actually are, and he has more patience for what I would see as pretension.  But, I can listen to him praise a film, but decide it is not for me, or be half hearted and decide I would like it.  That is to his credit.

I would say he is also an all too rare example of a critic (of any art form) who is quite comfortable with other people having different opinions to him.

His reviews on the radio often lack substance and tend to be just descriptions of plot. He has this strange hypocrisy where he likes genre films for exhibiting the hallmarks of those genre films but then dislikes (for example) the Transformers films for doing exactly that.

When he goes into more detail he can be okay but he's probably the worst of the big UK film critics.

Don`t go to the cinema much , so hadn`t seen the Revenant until the other night . What a long dreary watch that was (actually knocked it off after an hour ) , so slow , so dull , don`t think these big cast oscar winners do it for me most of the time however well they are filmed .

I really liked it . Acting was outstanding and that scene where Leo gets mauled by a bear was awesome ...looked like he was being mauled by a bear

Goldstone. Australian film set in the outback of the outback. And then a bit further out.

Quite enjoyed it. Some good performances (and stunning cinematography) even if the plot isn't going to be the most taxing thing you ever come across.

Better in the cinema - shows off the cinematography but in general, and as I've said before about many films, too long.

I rented Bob Lazar : Area 51 & Flying Saucers new in iTunes . Mind blowing stuff . This documentary film maker telling his story and finally getting him to speak publicly again  for the first time in about 30 years . Never changed his story at  all even though it’s largely ruined his life . I believe unequivocally in UFOs and if this all were proven it would , as he says , turn literally everything on its head . ‘ it’s just fact ‘ is his line

Facts and Bob Lazar seem to have only a passing acquaintance with each other.

I went to see Mary Poppins Returns yesterday - absolutely swam in nostalgia and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it. It's basically a remake with loads of references to its prequel but with modified story line - they've even kept the 1960s animation style and had Dick van Dyke (with a better but imperfect accent) dancing on a table at 80+ years old and Angela Lansbury, who must be about 100 now.

Bandersnatch an interactive film on Netflix where you the viewer make choices for the characters using your remote. Not great but interesting, a glimpse of the future?

Maybe, or maybe a gimmick. We'll see. It must be a lot more expensive to create (and difficult to write something coherent) so it has to be worth it from the viewer's perspective. It certainly made me concentrate, and I'm going to try it again and make some different choices to see how it plays out. I went down some "dead end" boring endings and it took me back to some key decision points to have another go.
