Went to see 'Leave no trace' last week. Utterly outstanding and l bawled. As good as 'Three billboards.' So as a light hearted response to this my good lady and I went to watch MI:Fallout. Really enjoyed it for all the reasons stated above. 

Cannot wait for Meg!

Skyscraper starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was poor, I always think if you don’t care what happens to the characters then it’s a loser. At one point where he’s hanging one handed from an unfeasably tall burning building I just thought “let go mate, end it for all of us”

I would do too, but, I have most of them on DVD, I first fell in love with Kiki's Delivery Service, but my favourite is "When Marnie Was There". Although "Princess Mononoke" is good.

I've seen all the Miyazaki ones, and have most on DVD, but not so many of Takahata's.

Saw two films last weekend, prompted by the Cineworld Unlimited card burning a hole in my pocket as I haven't been going as much lately.

First up, The Festival, with 'him off of The Inbetweeners' basically playing him off of The Inbetweeners in a film that would be several times better if the other three from The Inbetweeners were in it too.

It was ok, it passed a bit of time, but I couldn't honestly encourage someone to pay a tenner to see it. It's all a bit predictable and I'm sure funnier things happen at festivals than the mostly unbelievable stuff they contrived in the script for this. Its biggest problem, apart from being not that funny, is that none of the other characters ring true at all, they're just caricatures.

Next up, Ant Man & The Wasp, episode elevenhundredandtwelvty in the Marvel superhero franchise. I haven't seen the previous Ant Man film so I was at a bit of a disadvantage at the start, but it was fairly easy to get the gist of what was going on. There's plenty of humour in it, which I liked, and I knew to stay behind for the post-credits sequence, revealing why Ant Man wasn't in Infinity War. If you like Marvel stuff, you'll like this. If you don't, it won't change your mind.

I went to see AMATW as no one is calling it on Thursday with Mrs Shadow.

We both enjoyed it, her out of Killjoys was good and I'm sure she and her mentor will be back, her because she seemed a really interesting character, and him because ..well it's him. 

We liked the fact that it's a low level plot, the stakes are not the fate of the universe, just some good old fashioned larceny and outsmarting the feds.

I'm now worried that there were two end credit sequences, we stayed for the

"where are you guys" in the quantum realm  

ending.

There was another! Riiiiiight at the end, after the MPAA logo and the bit about no animals being harmed during the making of the movie. You'll have to go see it again now.

Seriously though, don't. It's not a big reveal.

On reflection, I may have misunderstood the point of the 'main' one. It probably doesn't explain why Ant man wasn't in Infinity War at all. Jeez, these things are complicated!

I loved it. It was good escapist trash. Even the laws of physics are incapable of defeating The Rock.

I went to see The Children Act last night ... no it's not a school play, it's a talky-talky low budget film with Emma Thompson as a Judge dealing with all sorts of moral dilemmas and a failing marriage, that sort of uplifting stuff. It's based on a book by Ian McEwan which I've never heard of, let alone read.

It was ok, it would probably work better on TV than the big screen, not least because Cineworld had the aspect ratio wrong last night so the tops of the characters' heads kept getting chopped off in the close ups.

Emma Thompson is good in it, but the story gets a bit weird and implausible halfway through. They could have made the courtroom scenes more dramatic too, but they've gone more for realism (I'm assuming, as I've never been in a real courtroom) and therefore it drags a bit.

File under: Worthy but dull.

Saw BlacKKKlansman and Searching recently. Both very good and very different.

Everything in Searching is shown on a computer or mobile phone screen (or voice call) using a variety of products - email, Twitter, facebook, Instagram, YouTube, webcam etc. Very clever and some good twists.

Oh, and some things that will make this a cult film in future. The background images on the computer screen and things like what's in other windows, the other emails when you see the email list, are all carefully constructed sub-plots, Easter eggs and clues to the twists of the film. Once you've seen them you can guess the end inside 15 minutes, but on first watching you're focused on the main story. i noticed that there were very clever details that had obviously been scripted, but didn't see any of the clues. Even things like typos (using "i" instead of "o", which is common) had been included and you saw people correcting as they typed. Very good. Here's an example:

"My own favorite side-plot is David’s relationship with his mother, who’s in Korea—she doesn’t speak English so all of his interactions with her are in Korean. As the story continues, you can see how often his mom is emailing and calling and messaging, and you can see how much more he’s responding to her keep her updated. And finally, you see her writing about buying a ticket to fly to the U.S. to help out, and all these things happen to her while she’s trying to get through the airport and so on…we built her as a complete character, who only exists in messages and emails. It took a ton of homework, but it was so much fun. Even the timing of the messages, showing that the date and time zones are different."

There hasn't been anything on I've wanted to see for ages, and judging by the lack of activity on this thread, same goes for everyone else too...?

But I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you're a fan of Queen's music, don't be put off by the lukewarm reviews.

It's not the greatest film ever made and there are a few dodgy wigs, but the story rattles along nicely, it has some funny bits (Mike Myers as the EMI record company boss passing judgement on BoRap as a single made me laugh out loud) and a few bits where you'll feel like you've got something in your eye too.

A lot has been written about the actor who plays Freddie Mercury, and he definitely does a good turn (though his teeth are a bit OTT) but the bloke they've got to play bassist John Deacon is a dead ringer too, and just like the real John Deacon, he doesn't say much either. :)

Two hours flew by, and it ends with an impressive recreation of their brilliant set at Live Aid.

I might even go see it again.

I took my nephews on half term holz to see the new Jonny English . Not bad , some decent juvenile humour which they loved ... and is usually up my street to tbh ! Just take it for what it is

Dismissed by critics but well viewed by the public could sum up Queen's entire career, tbh.

There's a bit in the film where the reviews of Bohemian Rhapsody when it was first released as a single in 1974 are flashed up on screen, which illustrates the point. Critics panned it, the public made it number one for 9 weeks.

Went to see the film about Neil Armstrong, First Man, at the weekend. 

I thought it was superb. It's quite slow paced and talky, but utterly engrossing. Really brings home how much danger the astronauts were putting themselves in to take part in the space programme and the impact it had on their families. 

The spaceflight scenes are filmed mostly from the cramped, claustrophobic perspective of the cockpit and even though we know he got there in the end (oh yes he did, conspiracy theorists) the journey towards that first moon landing is just incredible.

Just returned home after watching Bohemian Rhapsody at Cineworld in the White Rose centre. Pushed the boat out and payed extra for the IMAX screen. Loved the film and thought it perfect for both the IMAX screen and the surround sound effects. If you go to see the film and the complex has an IMAX screen it's definitely worth the extra cost. The final twenty minutes showing Queen's Wembley performance is amazing. I too got a fly in my eye and left clutching a soggy hankie.

A few weeks back, went to see 'Lucky' with Harry Dean Stanton. Very poignant in light of his death not long after. Despite this, it was extremely uplifting, and made all the better because of a stellar performance from David Lynch alongside the brilliant HDS!
