Where next for Magic?

Recommended Posts

Ricoh has a massive indoor hall which is used for the Wasps fan village and for the European semi final they used one of the car parks as an outdoor fan village to accommodate the Munster travelling support.

There are more pubs / breweries / rugby club than you would think within easy walking distance and also on site casino.Yes it is on the edge of city but the railway station at the ground is now open and regular shuttle buses to the main station and into town run for Wasps so could easily do so for MW, this would then open up accommodation in Birmingham as well as Coventry for people to use.

I thought Elstone said it was most likely to be Anfield again... during his interview at end of Magic... he said need to review, then decide best option after review, etc etc.... then couple of questions later said likely to be Anfield... a pretty quick review in his head and he made his preference

I always thought it was going to be at Anfield for 2 years anyway.

There is a lot to review in my opinion and first thing is getting more people to the event for starters and secondly making sure more people in Liverpool are aware of the event as well.

"The only way is up" as they say

Then don't have it on the day they are having an already ' booked in ' major event , when I've been in Liverpool in the past I've seen plenty of marketing , banners , signs for other events coming up , I assume this didn't happen for the Magic , did it happen for the Marathon ?

Yes it's in Westbridgeford , Nottinghamshire , a 25 minute walk from the town centre

Eh?...dunno if your post was a mickey take but west bridgeford is full of bars, restaurants and a cricket ground...if you want to go to anywhere near the 'forest', try edwinstowe about 20mins to the north of notts

Not that there's much of a forest there anymore, its all been bulldozed and is patchy at best..

Hold up...just realis3d you meant the football club, sorry! Lol

Could have it at both stadiums. City Ground is 30,445 and Meadow Lane is 19,841 so together that’s 50K

Double the cost , and fans don't get to see all the games ?

Aye true. I think Nottingham would be a good location for the CC semi final though, especially seeing as there seems to be some doubt among Bolton being able to host it

For instance, having 3 games at Elland Road on the weekend of 1st August for Yorkshire, Day, Leeds v Cas, Hull v Wakefield, Hudds v Hull KR sounds like a great event. It doesn't require any changes to Magic though.

I love that idea to be honest. A Yorkshire Day triple header.

Not at Elland Road though. So it at Hillsborough or Bramall Lane. Build the game in Sheffield and it doesn't give an advantage to others (I.e Leeds).

Would be good to have the Championship sides involved somehow too.

For every extra ' Event ' you have , you potentially weaken the ones you already have , this we have seen in our sport

We shall see.

Give customers a good product and they are likely to spend more though.

I think there's enough of a difference between a 1 day event (Yorkshire Day) and weekend event (Magic) to have a unique selling point, especially if it's somewhere different.

But isn't it the same product just moved ? , With all the same issues we have the Magic plus who loses their home game

No, because it's not trying to get people to stay overnight and watch both days. Cardiff Magic does.

Not enough interest in Nottingham IMO. It's a football city.

When the new stand is built it'll be a 40K plus venue , small by magic standards , but aim to fill

A bit left field but seeing how Magic weekend dosent seem so magic in its present form.

Promote Toronto & Toulouse,then have

Leeds/Cas,Hull/Wakefield and KR/Huddersfield play at Elland Road on the Saturday,

Toulouse/Catalan and Toronto/London double header in the South of France on the Sunday

Wigan/Salford and Saints/Warrington at Bolton on the bank holiday Monday

I'll get my tin hat !!

I feel I have a right to moan about the magic weekend because I’ve attended every single year.

Here’s my 5 steps for making it a success....

1. Take it back to Newcastle - the 3 highest attendances for the weekend and highest single day attendance was there, it’s a city centre location AND there is a rugby league club there.

2. Drop poorly supported teams from the event. If they’re not bringing fans they’re not offering value to the event- the atmosphere is dead for those games. Probably drop Catalans and London and they can move a fixture to Montpellier or something.

3. Invite the best supported championship clubs and have 4 games on each day. Add Leigh, Widnes, Bradford, Featherstone, Halifax and York. They would probably bring over 10,000 fans between them, smash attendance records and fill the stadium.

4. More activity between games - Yorkshire v Lancashire legends 9’s 3 match series over the weekend. Women’s 9’s matches as the build up to individual games. Newcastle legends v Rugby League legend 5-aside. Miles better than mascot races or a DJ nobody has heard of. They did this a little bit better in Liverpool with the PDRL games but how good would the build up be

5. Include a Newcastle Thunder game and sell the event to locals. Give them a reason to go and support their team. Go big on the fact a Newcastle legends team will be playing there for a Newcastle charity etc. Work closely with Newcastle FC like Catalans did with Barcelona... tweets and posts out to their fan base letting them all know it’s happening.

Four games on each day without the lesser supported clubs will instantly give you a record crowd back in a location that we know the fans already love. Couple that with some better rugby in between the games and fans will stay in for longer.

I think 40k on each day at Newcastle is achievable doing this.

This is the most sensible post ive seen on here regarding the subject of how to maximise the MW

It's not really left field when I said more or less the same 2 pages ago haha.

Elland Road is really easy to get to for pretty much everyone. But especially Leeds, Cas and Wakefield fans. You would have to do it "backwards" a bit and give the smaller sides the home game to allow for more actual sales (season tickets would likely have to be covered so Cas v Leeds allows you to sell a lot more tickets than Leeds v Cas)

Sheffield (like most of the north) unfortunately has terrible public transport, especially late at night, ive been to gigs in Sheffield that ive had to leave early to get a train back even as close as Wakefield.

I do a lot of work in Sheffield and the people do not have any interest in RL and never will, same in Liverpool. When Sheffield won the Cup the majority in the City couldn't give a toss.

Apart from when they were in the top flight and attracted attendances much the same as the likes of Warrington and Castleford.
