McNamara blasts Huddersfield after IMG discussions

The people who want to get rid of the Catalans are those who fear them, Leigh, Huddersfield etc.

Its this insular thinking that will stop the game progressing on any scale in the NH.

Little wonder we have a reduced TV deal and lower sponsorships deals. We need to be a lot more eclectic than we are now to get a better TV deal and better sponsorship deals

Who is the ' etc ' ? , And who has suggested ' getting rid ' of Catalans or Toulouse ?

Please provide evidence of this ' suggestion ' 👍

There have been people like Tommy Martyn at Saints saying how much it has cost them to fly to France this year.

I'm sure he knows full well how much Catalans and Toulouse pay to travel to the UK and back over a season to complete fixtures. Completely unnecessary and small time.

It feels like the Toronto central distribution discussion V2 with new protagonists.

A proper, commercialised, well-run and successful Rugby League club.

It's a bold strategy GS.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Tommy Martyn was never known for his intelligence and it shows again

Catalans finished bottom in 2006 with a crowd average of about 5.5k. Toulouse will either finish 11th or 12th with a crowd average of around 4.5-5k.

Toulouse has a population of 500,000 people. If they stay in SL for the next 5-7 years and fulfill their potential we could have another powerful club on our hands in the northern hemisphere.

Where is the value in that?

That's what certain clubs fear, another powerful club

What makes you think SL ‘gifts’ Catalan and Toulouse money? Catalan are on TV more than any other club in the sport. SKY absolutely pay money for Catalan as much as any other club. I’d flip your poor argument around and state the clubs on TV less are gifted money; not Catalan. Selling at satellite dishes in a particular postcode is a one small criteria to determine commercial value. In fact, I’d suggest in a particular weak and narrow-minded argument - see Derek Beaumont for example.

Because that’s the terms of the current contract, 12 teams in SL each receive nearly 2M in central funding per annum paid in monthly instalments from the RFL. Unless you can tell us all differently. I have just said it’s nothing to do with Leigh so why are you bringing them into it again?

On Sky last week the commentators were talking about schools rugby and how Castleford had four of the five national finalists.

That's possibly a reason why there are 3 teams with a WF postcode. So this then becomes a positive.

I think the point I am making is that there are factors we aren't always aware of when underestimating teams purely on what they have won.

Maybe there would be more schools outside the heartlands if the investment was there.

So Derek Beaumont wants to cut Catalans and Toulouse. And then increase the SL to 14 by promoting the current top 4. So that would be Leigh, Featherstone, Batley, and Halifax.

Proper born and bred Leyther, his uncle Mick second row still holds the record for tries scored (23) by a for'erd on the Aus GB tour 1958, and his dad the great second row Tommy Snr of Batley, Warrington, Leigh and Gt Britain was salt of the earth a lovely bloke and a very good friend of mine.

I think that most people will agree that Tommy Jnr was one of the best players not to recieve GB international honours, why the selector could not see the value in pairing him with Sean Long with the understanding and success they had is a complete mystery.

Sorry for the diversion.

Lots of speculation in that passage Scubs, I hope they accomplish it without being protected from jeopardy as a lot of people think should be the case.

They should be protected if it means Leigh replace them.

No. He wants 2 leagues of 10 with closer levels of funding between the 2 and more french teams added when they can demonstrate there is an appetite for a french TV deal and international games. He believes more funding should go to UK clubs and academies.

They're not even getting 4K a game at the moment. Struggling championship outfit Widnes get bigger crowds.  😃

They are averaging 4600 I think. With 2 home games left against Hull and Catalans I think they will be close to the 5k average I mentioned.

Good luck to Widnes with their crowds. It's a shame they aren't pushing for SL as the current Championship favourites are only averaging 2,939 from their 9 home league games this season.
