The PA system was working.  So testing whether it works wont of help in that situation.  

You can do all the tests you want, but if something trips, you are screwed.

I can remember putting on a concert where we weren't sure if the electricity supply was quite up to powering all the floodlights that were asked for.

We got them set up  for rehearsals and someone suggested leaving them on all afternoon to see if there was a problem.

They worked perfectly... until five minutes after the concert started.

Even without the technical glitch the ceremony was amateur, I could barely even hear the Kaiser Chiefs play. The technical glitch just made the whole thing unwatchable.
