Another key problem is that, after a couple of years of getting progressively worse, the BBC Live Guide page now has simply shut down.

It's still there, but what they choose to listed there has so many omissions it's not trustworthy any more. Right now, they have three cricket commentary catch-ups, plus the NW200 motorcycling from last weekend and nothing else.

As well as https://www.rugbyleagueontv.com for Rugby League, I use https://www.tvsportguide.com for other sports.

It’s gone on the app.

If RL Commercial didn't know the details then they weren't doing their job and if they did know and went with it anyway then they were doing a bad job IMO.

I agree and it would be even more surprising given IMG are involved, given it's their area of expertise

Oh, I see. I was referring to the browser version, which is still just about clinging on.

If you go into the settings, you can select/deselect various sports and/or broadcasters. If you select only BBC channels/platforms, they are showing quite a lot of live sport*, but their own website doesn't tell their viewers about it.

*including Association Football, which I believe is quite popular these days.

You would have thought so.  Let’s see.

Indeed. Couple of days ago, I clicked on the then still extent link in the app, only to be told that due to 'technical changes' the live guide page was no longer active. Today, in the app, the link to the live guide page is now totally gone.

The message on the (now gone) page said that, in future, the way to know about live broadcasts would be to enable notifications for specific teams or sports. That sounds like a massive backwards step.

Quick look on BARB suggests that BBC3 gets a 0.2% share each month versus BBC1 @ 19% and BBC2 @ 6%

The channel 4 coverage was great, the only issue was there wasn't enough games on C4 to allow them to be regular enough to generate some momentum in a given timeslot.

But we seem to have taken multiple steps back with the current BBC setup. Hidden away on BBC3 (I didn't realise that had been resurrected until recently!), poor coverage and quite random timeslot for each game.

So 'woke' means 'hiding things away on BBC3'.  Cheers for clarifying, I often wonder what people mean when they use the term.

so is 0.9% not so bad then? Or would that slot on BBC3 normally get a higher share?

(Of course, I agree that we would want a BBC2 or 1 slot)

I didn't know it was on tbh. Otherwise I'd have watched it. BBC3 isn't normally on my radar. There's no reason why they can't advertise it BBC1 and BBC2 for broadcasting it on BBC3.

All remaining games, whether Cup or League, with the exception of one women's Challenge Cup SF, are on BBC One or BBC Two.

I'm not normally interested in promoting unsubstantiated conspiracy theories but it looks like we've been shafted again.

Is the BBC anti rugby league?

How much due diligence did RL Commercial give this thing before signing the deal?

Were IMG involved? Does anyone (who should) actually give a f.......k?

Or are we saddled with the same old incompetent mutton, dressed up as lamb?

It just goes on and on and on.

I'm reliably informed that RL Commercial went with the BBC rather than Channel 4 because it feared that otherwise the BBC might pull out of covering the Challenge Cup.

I think it's regrettable that more games aren't shown on BBC2 rather than BBC3 or online, but there are other elements to the BBC's coverage as you will see from the original press release.

Having said that, the loss of Channel 4's coverage, its high production values and particularly the role within that of Adam Hills was a high price to pay for the contract being given to the BBC.

Should've offered C4 the rights to show cup games

The same C4 that showed/shows the massive hits "Its a sin" and "Queer as Folk"??

I liked the C4 coverage and would happily have it on there but ffs what an argument! C4 is massivly into US comedy shows (reruns), celebs do silly things and reality tv like the Piano.. its hardly a big butch sports channel!

How many matches were on BBC3 (I assume due to schedule clashes with other events)?

The deal was done pretty late and if other broadcasts, sport or otherwise, were already firmly placed in the TV schedules, they had to find a place for RL or not show it at all. The remaining men's games are supposed to be on BBC1 or BBC2.

One BBC match had unexpectedly poor camerawork, and now people are claiming this has always been and will always be the case. That's just not true.

Yes, I miss Adam Hills and C4's way of making their coverage look fresh on a budget, as well as their luck in picking mostly exciting games.

As for the protesting-too-much "RL is too straight/tough" post, that's fit at best for the conspiracy theories thread.

Just a thought.

Isn't the BBC3 demographic younger and more  "gen-zee" 🤮 than BBC 1 and 2 , so maybe  by putting some games on 3, the  BBC are trying to "reach out" 🤮🤮 to a new set of viewers?

Problem is, I think that set of viewers doesn't watch 3 as a linear terrestrial channel, so limiting serendipity.

Indeed, it was on-line only for a while, which further removed it from the viewer landscape.

The BBC deal is a bit of a stinker, but I think a l of the "extra" TV coverage has been sub par, plenty of the games on Sky have started as the game starts with commentators presenting and nobody pitch side/in a studio.

It was all given away for so little money, and I think a lot of people celebrated the theory of extra coverage and BBC TV coverage without thinking about the reality of what we would get. Those signing the deals seem like they are regularly in that camp too.

Maybe the BBC are doing it (unadvertised at random times on bbc3) to get low viewing figures and show that nobody is interested so they don’t have to do it again. Rugby league probably doesn’t really fit in with their agenda these days.
