Not a championship game.

The Match Commissioner doubled as Time Keeper last season

Other way round, actually. Timekeepers are paid less than match commissioners.

Jeez - that was last week!

Only put on  the TRL public website today,  together with the Kevin Nicholas rebuttal.

.... and the Batley chairman's response just now is spot-on perfect in summarising everything succinctly and factually while rebuking the ex Sheffield chairman's comments and this magazine's journalist. The former's assertion that clubs should be allowed to investigate themselves is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

Where can this be seen? I can't seem to find it.

League Express provides space for yet another Aston defender. Have they given space to anyone who  has given the proper context to this case yet?

Some of his points:

“18-month ban... Bloody hell, that’s excessive”

For being found to have knowingly fielded a player without medical clearance for concussion, the issue which threatens the entire future of our sport. For, by implication, knowingly endangering the health of that player? Excessive? Really?

the tribunal makes clear that the RFL was twice informed on match day about potential issues with Matty Marsh playing that evening but it made no effort to alert the match commissioner

None of these people will accept where the responsibility for choosing a team lies will they? It is not up to the RFL to step in to prevent a coach fielding an uncleared player. They might have done, yes, that would have been good. But it takes zero responsibility away from the Head Coach. None at all. This surely isn't part of their defence, if it is it's as crackpot as I thought.

If someone like Tim Butcher really has said the RFL (!!!) should apologise and switch it to merely a fine then Rugby League journalism really has lost its mind.

Equally even if we do want to punish the RFL for not stepping in, and I'd definitely advocate for more information on why they knew and apparently did nothing, it still doesn't take away from the Aston part of the case.

If 2 people did something wrong then 2 get punished..

There is some merit in the questions about internal investigations but then he does say he doesn't like the RFL marking their own homework (and I don't disagree) and the same argument could be made for the club investigating it. His analogy is interesting too, worked in banking for years and the anti money laundering regs say that any person involved in letting it go by them without reporting is liable for jail time. If HSE have a report of an accident at work, they may or may not come and investigate depending on the severity, they will expect a report and investigation to be done internally but they may well come in and take to task individuals at all levels that have caused or have not prevented the issue.. so there are times external people go into business and pull individuals over the coals, this isn't as anomalous as he makes out.

The more i read about/hear from  Kevin Nicholas, the more i like him.

He often posts on here, another point in his favour 🙂 Batley always seem to be a very sensibly run club.

"Then we have at least one claim where it is alleged that a player suffered a head injury in a game, returned to play perhaps when he should not have done then suffered another head injury in his return game and has suffered life-changing problems since then."

And in this case luckily it seems Matty Marsh has not had any further problems after getting a concussion in his next game.

Oh look.

Different sport - same issue over long term damage.

How can anyone defend those in our sport who claim "they know the risks when they play" or similar.

ALL clubs plus the sport itself have to reflect.

Yes it's football, but even if our sport is 100 times less risky, it's still an issue and it would be nice to hear some acknowledgement from Aston and his supporters.
