I don't think it's hosted any non-football events since the 1990s - not sure why.

Probably because it doesn't need to.

I don't like it particularly much but it's been a while since I've been.

We did it that way in the past but it didn't really add anything to what we where doing anyway. It was just a final tagged on to the 3rd test counting for World Cup points.

A dedicated World Cup with a combination of 4 Nations and tours in other years us a far more varied and vibrant calendar.

In a perfect world I totally agree.. and I'm not saying what we're doing is wrong but it's an interesting idea.

The one thing with the way we do it now is that it's either here or Aus or NZ, then world cup is the same, then tour is the same.. if we were able to open up more of the world by just needing 3-4 games staged that could be interesting for world knowledge expansion.

Equally it may force the hands of countries to play games (Lebanon et al), or maybe that's the International body to organise tours/mini tournament for the other nations, as they'd get points towards the final table...

It's not perfect but I don't think what we do now is either. It could also eliminate "high profile" world cup trounicngs without stopping those games for experience happening..

It's not going to happen but as a thought experiment it's quite interesting.

The plan announced last year (when Ashes 2025 was due to be in Australia) was -

2027 - New Zealand in England

2028 - Ashes in England

I assume 2027 is unchanged. 2028, wait and see.

If next year is a good series and close (if we could win then perfect really..) then you've got to imagine the Aussies will want it on home soil in 2028... Revenge would be a great seller..

Ashes every 4 years world cup every 4 years then tours either home or abroad would be brilliant as a plan.. then get some nice mid season internationals, if we could have a 2 weekend break across the world which could see teams travel (Aussies could play a SOO game in that period if they prefer), then we are looking at a nice 5-6 game international calendar a year which would be a good start.

It probably didn't feel like a big thing, but those tests did get played. So because there were World Cup points on offer and there was a schedule to get through, a certain team (say, one with a famously springy animal on its badge) couldn't decide it couldn't be arsed at short notice without losing face.

I think rather than replace the World Cup, the question is about how we stabilise a second international competition.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

But these tests were played before and after too. I think the issues we see now, and over the last decade or so, are entirely unrelated. Our biggest issue now is there is no balance anymore between the game in this country and the game in Australia, which leads to the Aussies riding roughshod over everything.

I do agree with your last paragraph, and that really should be easy but is continually being made complicated.

Just thinking about the first Kangaroo tour in 1908. The choice of test stadia would be considered wildly ambitious today: Park Royal (North London), St James's Park, Villa Park.

I expect we will get more than the 11,000 average across those 3 games though.

Gave the heartlands a little treat by playing the Challenge Cup final in Huddersfield.

Not much of a treat at the time. Every Challenge Cup final before 1928 was played in Yorkshire or Lancashire.

Although since 1928 (other than replays and during the war) only one has been held in the heartlands.

Am aware - it was meant as little bit of light humour for a Saturday morning.

NZ, Tonga and Samoa next year plus the Ashes series and the World Series.
Next year looks pretty good for international RL

NZ still have to get through PNG for that.

Already got a few northern and southern based mates sold on an England vs Australia in London.

Can’t be the only one on here who will make a weekend of it if there’s a test in the capital featuring the much heralded Kangeroos.

Make it happen rugby league!

Is that how this works? They're only interested in playing these games if they lose?

Think they got bored of winning everything. Beat them and rub it in their faces….give them a reason to play us

An announcement this side of Christmas is the best we can hope for I think. Hand on heart, I think it'll be after but we'll see. Now obviously they know the Cricket Ashes are defo on multiple years in advance but they named the dates and venues for next year's instalment a couple of months ago, so roughly 14/15 months in advance of the start date. That is where we have to get to.

2028, that`d have to be Tonga again wouldn`t it. It`d be four years since Samoa travelled as well.

2029 Ashes in Oz.

The original plan was Ashes 2025 in Australia then Ashes 2028 in England.

Now '25 is in England, we'll have to see what happens.
