Definitely be 7 billion deaths by now. All the fearmongering was definitely worth it.

That sounds a lot worse. So it sounds like they've done the right thing.

Certainly the figures for Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Very worrying times for anybody who has booked a holiday in any of the above places in the coming months.

I’m sure there are zero cases in North Korea . Not only will the glorious leader never allow it , but everyone is phenomenally well and healthy and the whole country is quarantined off

Some friends of mine got back from holiday in Italy at the weekend and are both now feeling ill. Apparently they're 'trying to get tested but whole system is currently in meltdown due to demand'. She is a doctor and they have self quarantined themselves. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 2 weeks and their experiences.

This is the official government advice, it will be updated with any changes so look there for the latest advice.

Anything and everything else, from “it’s all rubbish scaremongering” to “it’s The Stand come true and I saw Randall Flagg!” should be treated as keyboard warrior speak.

Don’t worry, they’re safe, I know you were all worried.

Don't worry, in the US Trump has appointed Pence to head up his coronavirus task force

(He needs someone to do it as the department to deal with pandemics has been wiped out in cuts)

Don't worry - Pence doesn't believe that smoking harms humans, that all science is guff and belief in God will save us

The recovery rate is steadily climbing. Recoveries outnumber deaths now by about 3:6 to 1. A week ago it was only 2:1. Of course this is partly about the process. Once a case is confirmed, a person can die much faster than they can be officially recovered. And there is still only one death outside China which could mean a few different things. One option would be that other health systems are better at dealing with corona than China's.

The number of confirmed cases passed 20K on 3 Feb so, allowing a 14-day period without illness before a person can be classed as recovered, we may start to see a huge jump in recoveries.

And finally, to keep it in proportion, since the start of this year, 2,000 Australians have died from smoking. A corona death toll of 900 is still fairly minor. 30,000 people worldwide have died from malaria already this year, based on average death toll over the last few years.

You’re making dodgy comparisons. It’s the potential transmissibility of this flu that seems to have spooked people. The Spanish Flu had a death rate of around 3% and killed around 50 million people in one year because it was highly transmissible.

Now that Coronavirus is cutting lose outside of China we’ll really see what it can do.

There's discussions on other threads about vaccines. Here's why the drug companies are being so over-optimistic theirs will work:

First to market gets a stranglehold on the market. They can then gouge the world at whatever price they see fit, all while PR pumping how evil the virus is and how they're the only ones who can fix it.

Profiteering.

Then rushing to it, in order to profiteer, is the major cause of complications, this is why the flu vaccine is so iffy and they can't quickly change course if they've got the wrong strain. Will it be properly clinically tested, or will the very first version that looks like it works just be thrown out to get that "first mover, now give us money" status?

It'd be nice if our government told us what it's doing and how it'll stop those two points.
