potentially Gildart

For some reason I completely overlooked Gildart. He was anonymous last year though, and not great in 2020 IIRC.

Will be interesting to see how he goes this year though.

Then my bad. I thought his time in Aus was too long to be temporary, isn’t he now 22?

So if he’s not eligible for Aus I’ve wasted your time with this discussion.

Unless of course, they offer him a place in the squad AND citizenship. But that’s for an Aus Immigration thread.

I think it's fair to say @burnleywelshis the authority on all things relating to Herbie, as he/she has known the lad personally/locally for many years. That said, I believe you'd be right in terms of eligibility for Aus.......IF he was interested - thankfully he's not.

Yes. Let’s have specialist centres with a bit more skill. We don’t want 17 second row style players across the park.

The lad looks to have some good basic skills and seems to be getting better each year, but i'm yet tp see anything ' x-factor' about him that really marks him out against other centres. Its also a bit unfortunate for him that he's been playing in an awful Bronco's side, arguably one of the worst in their history so his opportunities to shine have been fairly limited (that said guys like Tesi Niu really stood out in the same awful side).

Of course you are absolutely entitled to the opinion that Farnworth didn't shine last year and Niu stood out but its worth remembering that Farnworth was named the best back at the Broncos last year, not Niu.

You're inferring that he's not a proper English man?? He's Burnley born and bred.

And not only that, he turned a potential football career down to focus on RL.

As a saints fan, do you rate Percival? Although he was hot and cold in 2020 I’ve always thought of him as proven GB/Eng class. King has played consistently well during the the last two years, whilst Connor seems a bit inconsistent and needs to steady his temperament. Hardaker still has the class despite the off field stuff and Wigan’s form.

I’d certainly have Percy, King and Hardaker above Farnworth. Maybe Connor if he settles a bit this year. Depends where Hodgson plays him too. Newman isn’t far off either.

When fully fit Percival has real class as shown by match winning try's & performances. His biggest issue throughout his career though has been his fitness or rather the sheer number of injuries. He showed glimpses in 2021 of what he can do when fit so fingers crossed he has an injury free 2022

Though if you were picking the England team, there would be no need for any non Saints players at all, even if they had won the Dally M.

What has Percival done at test level to warrant your tag of proven GB/ENG class ??

Come on, you know what I’m saying is that the class he’s shown in the Super League is international standard. I’m not a Saints fan BTW. It’s just that Percival has been a cut above the general standard of SL centre. Thankfully, the last couple of seasons we’ve had some equally exciting centres start to come through in the game over here. I’m hoping Newman keeps his pace as he’s pretty elusive in full flow. Nice swerve, nice step. And I’m not a Leeds fan either.

Absolutely nothing. He has nothing in his game that is international class and his weak defence would be badly exposed at that level against the top teams.

Being a good Superleague centre hardly qualifies him as being a genuine Test centre,he’s yet to prove he can put together a sustained period of high quality play to justify your claims,he wasn’t even the best centre at Saints.

Naiqama always looked a far better player for Saints and was far more dangerous and he's far from one of the top international centres.

Really hoping Newman has an injury free run,Wardle kicks on & Farnworth continues to develop this season,we really need some better options at centre going into the World Cup.

Actually obtaining Australian citizenship is not that easy for professional athletes. As Quade Cooper found out.

So which British centres have been better than Percival over the last 4 years or so? King has been better in 20/21, and a few others are showing glimpses such as Newman and Wardle. Gildart wasn’t consistently the best centre in SL, although he did show some form against NZ 3 years ago.

Was their other centre eligible for Eng/GB?

It’s interesting to see how poorly some see Percival. I can’t think of many centres I’d take over him and certainly not any eligible for England. I think he’s a very good centre at Super League level and he’s one of the better attackers. He shoots out of the defensive line but that’s a tactic that was employed, firstly, by Justin Holbrook and now Kristian Woolf. There’s some Saints fans who think he doesn’t pass to his winger enough but I personally think that’s a little harsh.

England have gone from very few options at centre and having to play people out of position to now having a handful of options, all relatively inexperienced and most with potential. I’d probably pick one of Gildart or Percival and King right now if I had to pick but both Gildart and Percival have doubts over them, for me.

Standing out in a side that’s been as bad as Brisbane have the past couple of seasons is quite an achievement. I’ve wanted to see Farnworth in a stronger side to see how good he’d be in a side like that and I think there’s likely to be some more improvement in Brisbane in 2022, so it will be interesting again to see how he develops and how he handles the speculation about him leaving.

As an aside, I’ve always associated with the GB RL brand more than England RL. I think it’s most likely clouded by childhood nostalgia of my first international game being a Great Britain one and owning and loving the GB shirt I had as a child but also GB being the bigger and more important brand. While GB were playing Tri-Nations while I was growing up, England, or England A as they may have been known, were playing in that infamous game against a south sea island nation at Widnes that was farcical and was just a fight arranged as a rugby match.

I acknowledge times change, opinions move on and the non-rugby politics around it all but I liked GB and while I was a bit miffed at the time and general behaviour around the GB tour in 2019, I was excited to see GB again and was probably the most interested and excited I’ve been for an international game probably for some time; until Bennett begun disrespecting the whole thing. I’d like to say both could exist and it could be a bit of a carrot for Irish, Scottish and Welsh players who otherwise only get to play Tier One nations if there’s a World Cup but i appreciate that’s hard work to do and get everything on the same hymn sheet.

I don't want the Irish anywhere near the shirt. Britain is Cymru and England.

No its not.

Historically it is. Scotland is part of Great Britain not Britain. The person most associated with the red rose of, you know where is Henry Tudor. Cumbria comes from the word Cymru etc. Most of England is about as English as Darwin.
