Just asked ChatGPT who wone the 1989 Challenge Cup and reply was Wigan who beat London Crusaders.

I typed you are wrong and it replied...apologies for the mix up you are right it was Warrington.

AI then said it was St.Helens not Warrington and it said ...once again an error on its behalf.

And people now write dissertations for Uni based using ChatGPT.    And examiners probably use it to check their authenticity 😆

At non-league football, yesterday, at Knaresborough Town, the bloke standing next to me (in the first half) was wearing a Castleford Tigers jacket. Nice 70s retro look to it. On my other side, a group of eloquent, twentysomething fellas spent time discussing what stands were opened at the LNER Community Stadium for York City FC and York Knights RL games. One knew all about York Valkyrie, and last season's Grand Final win, describing York as a "rugby hub". He referred to "the rugby" at the LNER (always like hearing that, in northern communities - suggests league is the only rugby code played and/or that matters).

Went to the boxing last night in Manchester, walked past the RFL's headquarters.

And then I saw someone with an England RL jacket on, on the tram on the way back to the hotel.

A RL fan in Manchester eh? I was wearing my London shirt but it was hidden under various layers.

I saw someone in Attleborough, Norfolk, in a RLWC trackie top the other day - I did a double take but it was definitely that.

It's a good one though, don't know if he used Oldham to make it obvious.

This week on BBC 4Extra they are re-running old episodes of the Likely Lads. The episode this week from August 1967 contains the line "He's had trials for Hull Kingston Rovers". ( a boyfriend of Terry's sister)

The first episode of Uncanny on BBC2 in Friday featured the supposed haunting of a family farmhouse in the hills above Bury.

The bloke describing his experiences was called Liam and in the intro, they said he'd played a semi-professional Rugby League games and had a still photo of him in action. I'd guess he was mid to late 30s - ginger but bald, beard, possible an ex forward.

His surname wasn't mentioned unfortunately and I didn't recognise the kit (might have been a change strip?) so not sure which team.

Living along the M62 corridor it could have been any of a number of teams.

Anyway, what could be a stranger place to encounter a mention of Rugby League than a show about the paranormal?

Added mystery : Who is Liam? Who did he play for?

Bit of googling while play is stopped says he's called Liam Launders, and the only semi-pro rugby I can find is him playing union for Hawick in Scotland

Just rewatched the start and they describe him as a former "...semi professional *rugby* player". Ah well.

No wonder I never recognised the kit! Looking closer, he's even passing a Gilbert ball.

Wrong sport. 🤦

To be fair, the HMRC should be well acquainted with quite a few RL clubs 😉

I was on St Pancras station last night on the way to see Stiff Little Fingers in Camden and stopped on a seat to do up my laces. Behind me were a group of Saracen fans who’d been watching the RU at Tottenham. There were loads of them around yesterday. They were extolling the match when this woman (not part of their group and a Londoner) pitched in telling them how great league was and that they should head to Plough Lane. TBF the Saracen fans were interested in what she had to say. Anyone talking about RL in central London on a Saturday night is unexpected. (Sadly there were no RL tops at the gig).

BBC iPlayer. Great British menu, north east and Yorkshire main and dessert episode, one of the chefs (Ahmed I think his name was) does a Rob Burrow inspired pre-dessert. Totally unexpected/out of the blue.

What a band, I didn’t know they were still touring.
