Yes and perhaps that's why it's a fairly drab experience for those who aren't committed fans.

All of us on here, who are more or less all long term RL fans will be dead in the not too distant future. What then? How are we going to attract a new wave of fans if all we say is "the game is enough and if you don't like it ###### off". ? Because that approach seems to be the current one.

And I’d say you’re pretty well catered for at rugby games then?

But not everyone will be as motivated as you.

My son is at Sheffield Uni and I'm blown away at just how big sport is in the city. He anchored the Youtube coverage of the ice hockey during varsity in March and they got 10,000 for that!

I would absolutely love a successful RL team in Sheffield  (as would he so he could report/commentate on it!)

Now then, it's a race between Sandie....and Fairburn....and the little man is in........yeees he's in.

I, just like those Castleford supporters felt that the ball should have gone to David Plange but he put the bit betwen his teeth...and it was a try

Kevin Ward - best player I have ever seen

The real Mick Gledhill is what you see on here, a Bradford fan ........, but deep down knows that Bradford are just not good enough to challenge the likes of Leeds & St Helens.

Although a lot won't admit it because it's not the "correct" thing to say. When I was there everyone of the 10000 in attendance appeared very much to enjoyed the rather physical side of the sport as the players had some minor differences of opinion 😅

This is so true. Brutality is still adored by many. The rise and continued success of MMA is testimony to that.

Ice Hockey does have its advantages. It’s played on an indoor, compressed playing rink vs an open RL field which often has no cover from the elements. It has opportunity for music to bounce off the walls and build the crowd up… and it is a pretty good spectacle really.

10,000 is a remarkable crowd for Sheffield Ice Hockey though, no doubt.

Been to Steelers games a handful of times and always enjoyed the experience.I like the physical side the puck moves too fast to keep up with it.At my age though i don't half feel the cold bl--dy freezing.

Watched ice hockey - like rugby league, fast and physical - at a few different venues. Sheffield has to be one of the warmest. Last time I was there, I could have spectated in swimwear. I’d nominate Blackburn and Widnes as the coldest. They were bl**dy freezing!

I have family members living in Sheffield. Occasionally, ice hockey will intrude into sporting conversations dominated by the Owls and the Blades. Sadly, at least to one born and raised in rugby league country, rugby league is never mentioned. Neither is rugby union, so it’s not all bad. ‘Rugby’ isn’t a Sheffield thing.

Remember the parades at Osdal? Carol Decker, Stax of Soul?

Saw tribute acts at Cas, Fax. Unforgettable duo of Cher and Neil Diamond!

Steps at the GF, James as well.

So, it can be done, Derek showing the way, just needs a bit of will from clubs.

Speculate to accumulate.

That's half the problem teams don't want to 'waste' ? Spend their money imo, they probably think its a waste of money.

York Knights' offering for Monday night's fixture against Batley :-

York RLFC are delighted to announce that local band Skylights will perform at the LNER Community Stadium ahead of our clash against Batley Bulldogs on Monday 18th September (7.45pm).

The York indie rock band will be playing a 30-minute set from 6.45pm in their first ever performance at the LNER Community Stadium, creating an electric atmosphere ahead of the Knights’ final Betfred Championship home match of the season.

York RLFC are delighted to continue our association with Club supporters Skylights, whose single ‘Britannia’ has featured as our walk-out song throughout the 2023 campaign.

Each to their own. I have attended Ice Hockey games at quite a low level and Elite level. (My son used to be into it and made noises about wanting to play but never did).

I won't go as far as to say it was boring or rubbish, more that it was maybe 'too fast'? I couldn't really tell what was going on or actually see what happened and as such, couldn't really get into it.

RL though, at all levels needs to pull it's socks up because the match day experience is just non existent. With all due respect to the girl, you just know they'll be using Lizzie Jones for upcoming big games or maybe kids unfurling flags. Which is probably exciting for the kids concerned but ultimately underwhelming.

And at one point in the late 90's or early 00's RL was pretty much the front runner in the UK at this sort of thing. Fingers pulled out now please!

Yeah each to their own it is a very fast game, like every other sport the more you watch and learn the better it gets.

You’re definitely part of our problem then

This is exactly what we need to be doing. It doesn't have to be Daniel Craig skydiving onto the pitch to present the match ball, just a little bit of imagination and effort can go far.

And who's to say this band (about whom I know nothing) won't turn out to be massive? The worst case scenario is that a few people have a good time and maybe tell others.

Out of all the American sports I've witnessed live Ice Hockey crowds were as close to a rugby crowd atmosphere as I got, admittedly I've not watched NFL live

Which, to be fair, is pretty much what happened for the Wheelchair RLWC games in Sheffield last year, which got great crowds, rave reviews from tv.viewers and so on. But there doesn't seem to have been much attempt to follow up on that. Or if there has, I've missed it.

Sheffield have two Wheelchair teams. How hard have you looked?

Makes you wonder why pop concerts don't start with a game between Wigan amd Saints.

They don't because there is usually more demand than supply, hence no need for any other sideshows.

When we are locking people out of RL games and the tickets are going for an arm and a leg online, we might be able to just focus on the game only.

If this approach of the 'game being enough' worked, it would have bore fruit by now.
