So you're confident that he would have signed for them if they weren't already nailed on to be in SL next year?

Based on what the new owner is saying and has shown he’s willing to spend, quite probably!

Some of the nonsense about IMG in this thread is amazing. Like these kind of signings never happened before IMG arrived.

From what I can gather Leigh wanted to keep Asiata and offered a good deal, Hull have offered £220k+ per season on a 3 year deal and Lam isn’t getting into a bidding war and already has irons in the fire elsewhere. Asiata sees it as his last pay day before heading home. We will lose Amone aswell.

That's interesting,  I was assured on here last week there was no issues with Leighs out of contract players

A signing that wouldn't have happened without them.

So you're saying that IMG are having an immediate and measurable effect?

You're saying IMG are having a positive effect on the game?

In other seasons Wakefield would only have been able to sign players in November - that was the rule wasn’t it? Oh no didn’t Leigh sign a load of SL players whilst in the Championship but that was pre IMG so doesn’t fit some narratives

Leigh took a huge gamble by their own admission.

What gamble? Wakefield are basically assured of a place in SL next year based on their indicative grading.

Yes contracts start in November, but there wasn't a rule saying a club couldn't "sign" someone until November.

I think the point was a club couldn't offer contracts with any confidence if they were in that "yoyo" region of the divisions.

Now, with clubs understanding and valuing their businesses better (barely 6 months into IMG), are we seeing the game start to fulfil it's business potential?

Another point scored for IMG.

A club, in this instance Wakefield, are no longer speculating on foundations of sand and guesswork/blind faith, they are building on a solid, measurable bedrock of knowing exactly where their business is.

Shall I get someone on the phone from London so you can can explain why them definitely going down is good for the game?

If such a person exists, yeah.

Why is it bad " for the game" if the weakest club (which they clearly are), are relegated at the end of the season?

If anything, it shows the flaw in the previous system, where a a club freaked a run of games just at the "right" time and are now in a division where they simply cannot compete - nether on or off the field.

Not guaranteed = a gamble.

But would they be the weakest club if they weren't told before the season started that they would be going down whatever? Don't you think that they would have a bit more fight if they knew there was something to fight for?

Both systems have their flaws but some people are just too stubborn to admit it.

London - Them getting replaced in the top flight next season does not show that P&R is a failure. They would no doubt have done things differently if they did not already know they would not make the cut.

Wakefield - This is clearly a positive. A team is able to make signings knowing that they are pretty much nailed on to make the top 12 in the gradings.

Leigh - This is a flaw in the new system. They are one of the teams under threat and if they were to miss out on the top 12 its a huge reduction in money and at this point they have to be careful who they sign and what they spend leading to uncertainty in their players minds.

Hull - A success of the system. A basket case of a club but know that at best they will be an A grade or at very worst they will be comfortable in the 12 giving them free license to spend stupid money on players.

Yes signings like Asiata happened under previous systems but a lot of the time they were for the same reasons, anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves.

John is 31 and now Injury prone. Great player though.

We have others who have grown to play in that pivot but we will miss his leadership. He still has a job to do.

Amone needs tying up but I can’t see us holding on to him.

I believe Leigh are interested in Patrick Mago, another prop I like but let’s see how it goes. Lots of twists and turns and Hull have had to release this one early to keep the interest on what is currently a very poor season

As for Leigh, it will be interesting to see if John pending departure has any bearing on the performance. Will we swim or sink ?

If Hull would take him now and we can get rid of his contract I would let him go.

As for the man himself I am very surprised at this news, Leigh took him when he was feared of having a covid jab and could not play in Aus, he is revered by both the club and fans and expressed more than once how he and his family are very happy here in the town and he loves being at the club,  he has played less than one and a half games out of the last 16 and has been looked after all that time, so let him go and spend the money on someone else who might just be more appreciative of being at the club.

What I really think is laughable is that after talking to Richie Myler he says he has the same ambition as himself, he was part of a very very ambitious plan, why doesn't he just say, the money was to good to turn down instead of all the waffle.

In other words, the system is a success for the clubs that benefit?

It’s not so much about the gamble the clubs take, it’s the players’ willingness or apprehension about signing a Super League contract for a club, based on how likely they are to be in Super League. See players like Blake Austin who ended up seeking employment at the end of last season.

By virtue of gaining an unexpect promotion, shopping around in November when all the decent players have been signed up, having no foundation to support a SL team, then yes they would. They'd be relegated whatever the system this season. The difference is Cas and Hull might have been a bit more nervous.

Harry , a fantastic analogy and equally a brilliant read.I totally agree with everything you have written. Get rid now and use his money to bolster.Leigh must have irons in the fire. Also is there something more with this calf we don't know and Leigh we're not willing to take a punt ?
