One of the great things about Garry is that he isn't thin-skinned and precious.

He has no problems at all with the poll.

In my opinion, this is an absolutely terrible take.

It should be about whether or not something is an acceptable way to behave, not just whether or not the subject says he's offended or not.

There are significant numbers of former players in both rugby codes who have become involved in legal action against governing bodies following diagnoses of brain damage, early-onset dementia etc. It's a controversial subject, but using words like "thin-skinned and precious" towards anyone who feels sensitivity about the issue is unhelpful in my view.

I'm sure you could have found a better way of allowing readers to express their affection and concern for Garry then a four-option poll, in which three of the options were variations on "time to get rid."

In fact he's delighted that almost 50% of the votes in the poll say he's irreplaceable, which in my opinion he is.

So thanks for your concern, but it's not necessary.

I suggest you cast your vote and don't feel any obligation to vote in any particular way.

It really is so sad to see the level you have fallen to, Martyn.

You are entitled to your opinion.

I appreciate you wanted to keep something topical for a poll on Garry, and he would be classed as a marmite columnist - you either love or hate him.

However, I feel that the poll is in really bad taste and surely there would have been a different angle to go down that was more positive about his writing capabilities.

I appreciate your point but it's hard to imagine something more positive than giving readers the chance to say that Garry is irreplaceable.

Or to say that a guy who has had to retire due to a Brain Injury that he was rubbish and won't be missed.

That's more the issue Martyn, whether Garry approves or not. It seems your customer base think it's crass and in poor taste.

He’s not the only one at LE for whom it would be wise to retire.

We're also giving them a chance to express an honest opinion, which is what Garry did every week.

I'm not sure how many of those people are really our customer base. Some may be.

There's a minority who will have a go at us, come what may.

I try not to worry about that.

Thin skinned? Have a word with yourself, seriously. This is genuinely a terrible take.

Why not say what you think?

I'm far too young to retire.

Good. Someone has to pay for our pensions! 😄

22% of people have voted for that option.

I think that probably shows that people are putting to one side the illness part and just giving their honest opinion on whether they liked Garry as a columnist.

I voted for "We will miss him but he can be replaced" because that's how I feel about all presenters and pundits.

I will miss Gary Lineker when he retires from BBC sport, but he will be replaced. Just as Alan Hansen, Jimmy Hill, Des Lynam, Bob Wilson, etc. were before him.

Loved him as a player but his opinions as a columnist were often somewhat detached from reality and from the sport as it is now played.

LE has needed fresh impetus and new ideas for a while now, especially when a leader has been in charge for so long. It happens, no shame in that.  Sometimes it’s just time to move on for the good of the company.

Always enjoyed listening to Garry and reading his page in LE.  I didn't always agree with him but I always got the impression that he still had a great passion for the game and the way he felt it should go.  They were his opinions, not right, not wrong, just like we all have our own opinions.

As a player he's been there, done it ang got the 'T' shirt  and has my utmost respect for a fantastic career albeit one that could have and should have yielded more silverware.

All the best for the future Garry.

Are you a relative of the Game Caller by any chance?

What in earth do you want from LE? They've been  challenging of the RFL and especially of the IMG relationship. They've been very supportive of challenger clubs such as Leigh, too, and Bradford. They are far from supporting the status quo into the bargain.

I don't agree with their editorial position on many things, but that's my problem not theirs.

Let 'em get on wi' 't job.

Just watched the latest LE podcast and at the end, Martyn mentions Garry and if I heard him correctly, he say, "Garry....brain damage, which you'd have to conclude occured during his playing career."

IF that is the case, then it makes the Sheffield Eagles affair much more than an administrative oversight.

That's 1 hour , 1 min into the podcast.

Why do you have to conclude it happened during his playing career? The BBC says "Schofield underwent surgery to have an eye removed in September 2022 which he says led to "headaches, migraines, forgetfulness, anxiety and lack of concentration, all of which led to my brain damage diagnosis"."

That's doesn't seem to suggest that his playing career caused the brain damage - or was the eye removed due to an old rugby injury?

I don't conclude any such thing. The  I merely mention what I heard -or thought I heard- on the  podcast. Of course, only the medical professionals can make such a diagnosis and they are not going to make that public.

Sorry John, you're a bit of a drive by there - I was quoting you quoting Martyn! Completely get what you're saying - I think we're on the same page
