On a totally unrelated topic, here's a bit of a blow to the collective American ego.

USA-Immigrants.png.ebfe9d4c9634d42a25bf8bd9190abde8.png

So the only countries over 34% are Dominican Republic (but not Haiti?) Sierra Leone and, ironically, Liberia. I don't know how solid the data is but this guy Max Fischer is the chief number cruncher at Washington Post and has produced a lot of interesting World maps. so I think he's credible.

Apparently, if you crunch the numbers one step further, there is a total of 138 million people who want to emigrate to USA. Of course this is flawed since if only 1% of Indians and Chinese wanted to, that would be another 40 million. If you added up all the grey countries on the map, even 1% would be another 100 million.

Another point: the number of Mexicans who want to move to USA is  less than the number already there. There are roughly 20 million Americans who were born in Mexico and only another 7-8 million want to go there. Given that the recent net migration between the two shows more people moving to Mexico, it makes a lot of USA immigration policy towards Mexicans seem poorly researched.

I'd also be interested to see the wording of the question. I can easily believe that 100 million+ people want to move to "a First World country," but if they were asked, I wonder how many would "settle" for Canada, Australia, NZ, UK or nearly anywhere in Europe. I spend some time on Quora.com where there are a lot of questions about migration and the number that mention USA is surprisingly small.

Why dont you sign your name David 1673 then?

When I signed up to this site, I was working for the NHS, while carrying a pager, 1673. Try it. Call St Mary's Hospital, London W2, and ask to Bleep 1673. It's a 24hour carry, so call any time

Are they next door neighbours?

Or housemates?

Shane Warne was proud of the fact that he'd never read a book. Great role model.

Rather sad to see UK only country in Europe with a colour.

I know what it's like. I read a lot on the internet but I haven't read an actual whole book since I moved to this place 2 years ago. I just can't get the setup right. Bed - light's not right. Lounge - chair too uncomfortable. I even bought some e-books but the reader doesn't work on Linux. I think the internet has been bad for my concentration, too easy to just click on something else.

The USA genuinely is a great place for Brits to live in to be fair.

I'm sure it is, I've nothing against America. Just sad that out of all Europe it's only UK people dissatisfied with their own country
