I dont get this obsession with Murray. Okay he's won a couple of the minor tournaments this year but hasnt won a Grand Slam tournament for over 2 years.

And besides which, its called sports PERSONALITY of the year and Murry doesn't have one !

Fury, on the other hand, has two.

For me its always going to be harder for a team sport player to win this (understandably) - with the exception of football due to its sheer popularity.

As good as Sinfield has been in his sport, the sport he competes in lends itself much bigger margins for error due to the help he gets from his team mates/rules of the game.  For example, one error for a heavy weight boxer like Fury on Saturday night could end the contest  (in an unpleasent way) within seconds.  Additionally Sinfield wasnt classed as the best player playing in his competition last year (let alone the world) nor has he won anything at an interntional level.  With this in mind Sinfield, rightly, has no chance against the Tyson Furies, Chris Froomes, Lewis Hamiltons, Jessica Ennias Hills, Farahs of this world who have all won individual (appreciate some of these compete as individuals affiliated with teams) global competitions and are largely considered the world champions in their  comps.

Football has the most team awards, but has done a lot less well in the individual award - only 5 winners since SPOTY started in 1954.

Leeds deserve the team award more than Sinfield deserves the individual one.   Fury should win easily but he won't..........he's heavyweight champion of the world FFS.

The only comparable achievement to his is Whitlock who's the first ever British world gymnastics champion.......can't imagine how hard it must be to excel in that sport.

I fear all this Davis Cup hype will create a Tennis love in.......did we really beat anyone any good to win it? Most of the top players pull out of their teams and Murray decided to give it a go that's all.

If all the top players took it seriously Britain wouldn't have a chance.....countries like Spain or Switzerland would hammer us.

Can't argue with Hamilton being up there i suppose but to me he's just good at driving the fastest car.

At least Tyson Fury went after the most credible world champion. He's easily good enough to lift another of the alphabetti spaghetti belts if he wanted to do it the easy way.

No way should he be shortlisted for this award. If he wished to leave Rugby League as a winner he should have done so, NOT defected to Union for an easier life and I should think a fatter pay packet.

Graceless, he's been a great leader so why not?

Anyone noticed any articles about Sinfield in particular in the media. Given it is the off season and stories are thin on the ground you'd think the first ex RL player to get a nomination would be a story worth publishing.

Well the Indy yesterday gave it about three column inches and listed most of the nominees. No prizes for guessing who they left out.

Chippy, nah, not me.

I suppose a lot depends on your perception of what is a sport. I personally don't consider F1 a sport, and I'd ban boxing. I think your assessment of Jess Ennis is incredibly sexist. She competes in a sport that is incredibly taxing, especially on a woman who has had a child. I'd like to see Kev win it, he's a nice guy and he's been a great player and ambassador for our game. But I'd settle for Jess.

Perception of what is a sport has nothing to do with this award so that's irrelevant.

My comment of Ennis has zero to do with sex...if it was Henman I'd say "golden boy". Basically media darlings. Heptathlon is a niche activity that very few partake in. That's not to take away from her achievement (especially the circumstances), but she's competing in a niche event.

Tyson Fury is the heavyweight champion of the world, and beat the undisputed champion in his own back yard. There are champions (belt holders which are ten a penny) and then there are champions. To be the #1 heavyweight on the planet, what Ali, Tyson, Foreman, Joe Louis etc. achieved..achievement wise nothing that any other Brit has done this year comes close. Frank Bruno (another media "golden boy") beat Oliver McCall to win a belt, what Tyson Fury did dwarfs that. To hold the Ring Magazine belt means he's the best fighter on the planet. He's also a great personality but being a traveller he doesn't fit in with the establishment who still discriminate.

Lewis Hamilton won it last year and they tend not to award it multiple times...plus he just has to beat one person (his teammate) to win. Always had a problem with F1 and the heavy factor the car has on determining the victor. Next year it's highly likely to be another straight fight between the two Mercedes drivers. Murray hasn't done anything in the slams to warrant a win...though his Davis Cup form has been imperious so he deserves his part in the team award.

F1 requires skill and concentration but not physical prowess so I don't consider it a sport.  I play tournament bridge which requires similar attributes, and a judge has decided (and I agree with him) that it's not a sport.  If you play any sport there's a chance you'll get injured, but injuring your opponent is not the prime object of most sports, it is in boxing, so IMO it's not a sport.

Rugby League has never had a player nominated in the entire life of the programme (yes I'm old enough to remember the entire life)  It's great for the sport. It would be nice if Kev could "place."  He deserves his spot, his achievements just this season have been remarkable, but not only that he's captained his country and is (was) a very good player.  Your original post is typical of you, dismissive of the sport this forum is all about. Effectively you are a troll  Rugby League for years was regarded as inferior to Union because it was played for money by working men largely from the North of England, whereas Union was perceived as being played by amateurs in the "Corinthian" spirit (most of us are aware that this was untrue.)  It is largely IMO because of this perception that the game has been held back from expanding.  This nomination goes a little way to redressing the balance.

9 out of 12 is most. Rugby is vaguely news worthy as it's a first for the sport.

If this was the first time we have been omitted then OK, but it isn't as you well know

I'm sure the previous  winners have benefited from the publicity their nomination creates in the lead up to the award. Sinfield being the only RL player ever nominated is worthy of a story in itself so it will be interesting to see where it comes up outside of here and the BBC SPOTYA pages.

I can't believe that Tai Woffinden isn't one of the nominees. He has just become world speedway champion for the 2nd time in 3 years, winning the title easily, and along the way has raised over £100k for Great Ormond Street Hospital through various charity events.

Plus, unlike some of the usual suspects, he actually has a bit of personality. He's probably a bit too edgy for the Beeb though with his facial tattoos etc.

I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally

Great to hear that Kevin Sinfield of his nomination. Not the first Rugby League player to be nominated, I recall voting for Ellery Hanley a number of years back, and I now admit it I voted quite a number of times for him. We know he won't win, particularly following the recent Davis Cup triumph. Still fail to see why a Rugby League side never gets nominated for a team award.
