warriors 95 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Are all these defunct clubs from the town of Oldham or from surrounding villages and towns within the borough?

As an ex Fitton Hill player in our case it was a fact that a whole bunch of us got older and other priorities got in the way we also fell victim to our better players being "poached" by the" big three" clubs.Rule changes like the 10m rule making the game a whole lot tougher and the lack of younger players coming through, the local high school that produced lots of players for us and some notable pro players closed , and being a pub based club running our own youth teams was an expensive and time consuming task . The club ran from 1964 and played its last games in 1994 when lack of numbers forced the decision to fold although we had our golden decade in the 1980s when the club reached the final of the local cup twice winning once and having several runs in the national amateur cup taking the scalps of many notable higher ranking teams going deep into the competition. 7
sheddingswasus Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) The club have just announced that all 31 players plus all the coaching staff have been fully sponsored at £1200 weach. That is well over £40,000 raised. Not sure what other clubs sponsorship’s are like cost wise but this is an great effort. The town is really behind the club. This sleeping giant is definitely being woken up! Edited December 6, 2024 by sheddingswasus 9 2

But the council eventually knocked it back. There were many theories and conspiracies as to why. My favourite is the councillor who was initially for it, voted against because she had a dream the night before the vote. Those against said it would be a white elephant. 30 years later we now have something that is nearing that dream of sportspark 2000. Just hope both pro clubs can climb their prospective ladders and fill the ground. 2

Really hope this carries on growing for them. 1

The Art of Hand and Foot Posted February 16 Author Posted February 16 It seems that there is a perception that today's 50-4 drubbing of York is somehow an anomaly. After all we've only just gained promotion from league 1. That unlike York, we're inexperienced in championship rugby. That's not so. The only people not experienced in championship rugby are us, the fans. The players themselves are more than experienced in championship and even SL rugby. I would argue that Mike Ford has taken his experience from the 89-90 season, when Oldham were a first division team in all but name, and is now replicating that. Last season we were a championship team, in all but name. As for this season ? Let's see. Today was not an anomaly. 5
sheddingswasus Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) Good game at today with Oldham beating York by 50-4. This wasn’t a game where either team was badly under strength. York put in some great attacking moves and on another day would have scored plenty. But Sean Long (along with Jordon Turner and Joe Wardle) has built a team based on defence and attack. They defended everything York put on attack and then produced some scintillating rugby on attack. Edited February 17 by sheddingswasus 1

Their try was well worked, but other than that I don't think they produced any great attacking moves - just a lot of errors. They lacked discipline, line speed and motivation compared to when I've seen them previously. If Oldham play like that regularly, they will make the playoffs. York seem to regularly have a slow start then come to life for a late charge for the top 6. 3

I know the last couple of years they've had late charges that meant they snuck in to the play-offs, but eventually those late charges will splutter. Imagine where they could finish with a strong start to the season! Fantastic to see Oldham doing well. I don't anyone else will put 50 on a good York side this year. Oldham will inevitably have some poor results this year, but it looks like they have stable owners and management that know those things will happen and won't implode like the Keighley owners. 3
