Was it a case of some players also played other sports like cricket in the off season?

As an ex Fitton Hill player in our case it was a fact that a whole bunch of us got older and other priorities got in the way we also fell victim to our better players being "poached" by the" big three" clubs.Rule changes like the 10m rule making the game a whole lot tougher and the lack of younger players coming through, the local high school that produced lots of players for us and some notable pro players closed , and being a pub based club running our own youth teams was an expensive and time consuming task .

The club ran from 1964 and played its last games in 1994 when lack of numbers forced the decision to fold although we had our golden decade in the 1980s when the club reached the final of the local cup twice winning once and having several runs in the national amateur cup taking the scalps of many notable higher ranking teams going deep into the competition.

The club have just announced that all 31 players plus all the coaching staff have been fully sponsored at £1200 weach. That is well over £40,000 raised. Not sure what other clubs sponsorship’s are like cost wise but this is an great effort. The town is really behind the club. This sleeping giant is definitely being woken up!

Let's see what team wigan put out!!

I expect to see a lot of their first-graders (maybe half the team?) considering it is only 3.5 weeks before their SL campaign starts.

Interesting read about how the relationship between ORLFC & OAFC has evolved in recent times, how playing at Boundary Park has had a positive impact on the town and Rugby League in general and it appears the RFL have been to Boundary Park are impressed with the facilities and location and would like it to host Challenge Cup Semi finals 👀

It's strange, thinking back, when sheddings was knocked down there was supposed to be a new multi sport stadium called Sportspark 2000 at boundary park. But the council eventually knocked it back. There were many theories and conspiracies as to why. My favourite  is the councillor who was initially for it, voted against because she had a dream the night before the vote. Those against said it would be a white elephant.  30 years later we now have something that is nearing that dream of sportspark 2000. Just hope both pro clubs can climb their prospective ladders and fill the ground.

If you live in or near Oldham, have you noticed much more general interest in the RL team over the last year or so?  Really hope this carries on growing for them.

There is a buzz around the town again. People who have not been near on 30 years are there again. There are kids in Roughyeds kits everywhere.

It seems that there is a perception that today's 50-4 drubbing of York is somehow an anomaly. After all we've only just gained promotion from league 1.  That unlike York, we're inexperienced in championship rugby. That's not so. The only people not experienced in championship rugby are us, the fans. The players themselves are more than experienced in championship and even SL rugby. I would argue that Mike Ford has taken his experience from the 89-90 season, when Oldham were a first division team in all but name, and is now replicating that. Last season we were a championship team, in all but name. As for this season ? Let's see. Today was not an anomaly.

Good game at today with Oldham beating York by 50-4. This wasn’t a game where either team was badly under strength. York put in some great attacking moves and on another day would have scored plenty. But Sean Long (along with Jordon Turner and Joe Wardle)  has built a team based on defence and attack. They defended everything York put on attack and then produced some scintillating rugby on attack.

I was just reading the Salford thread. They hit hammered and it was expected. I also think what Salford did was not in the spirit of the game and they should be dealt with for bringing the game into disrepute.

So as much as I think Salford should be punished, should we give Santos more credit as it was still 13 v 13?

Literally comparing apples with oranges there.

I went to this one today, I thought Oldham were impressive.

York however were dire. Their try was well worked, but other than that I don't think they produced any great attacking moves - just a lot of errors. They lacked discipline, line speed and motivation compared to when I've seen them previously.

If Oldham play like that regularly, they will make the playoffs. York seem to regularly have a slow start then come to life for a late charge for the top 6.

Hopefully, Oldham will have a couple of their 4 regular starters (Turner, Lawton, Craven, Agoro) back for next week as well.

Given Agoro and Craven's form in our previous game, they will be automatic starters if fit. Turner is our captain and Lawton one of our stand out impact middles. I agree that the lads who filled in yesterday did a great job but that was not our best 17 by any stretch.

York fans must be tearing their hair out at the slow starts. I know the last couple of years they've had late charges that meant they snuck in to the play-offs, but eventually those late charges will splutter.  Imagine where they could finish with a strong start to the season!

Fantastic to see Oldham doing well. I don't anyone else will put 50 on a good York side this year. Oldham will inevitably have some poor results this year, but it looks like they have stable owners and management that know those things will happen and won't implode like the Keighley owners.

Exactly, York put best team they had available- Salford didn't because of Mr Rowley.
